Since the establishment of the ASEAN-China dialogue, China-ASEAN relation has broadened and deepened considerably, making it one of the most dynamic amongst ASEAN Dialogues. A Commemorative Summit to mark the 15th anniversary of China-ASEAN relation was held in Nanning end October 2006 to celebrate this milestone. A Joint Statement outlining future cooperation was also released at the event as a signal of continued commitment on the part of ASEAN and China in the development of this relationship. . .

There have been many changes in ASEAN-China relations in the last 16 years, especially after China became a dialogue partner of ASEAN and an active member of the ASEAN Regional Forum and the ASEAN Plus Three Process, signed the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation (TAC) and proposed a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) with ASEAN. However, the history of ASEAN-China relationship was full of prejudices and even indirect conflicts caused by China's Communist Party subversion and infiltration of Southeast Asia. These were terminated following Deng Xiaoping's visit to a number of Southeast Asian countries in 1979, which began a new era of ASEAN-China relations. This was followed by the normalisation of relations between China and the last of ASEAN members, namely Indonesia, Singapore and Brunei in 1990 and 1991. . .

Malaysia-China relation today is a tale of how two countries have successfully transformed a negative relationship into a mutually beneficial partnership. After Malaysia gained independence from Great Britain in 1957, and until 1971 when she voted for Beijing's entry into the United Nations to replace the Republic of China, ties between the two countries were strained because of a clash of ideologies. Adversely affected by its own communist insurrection (1948–60), Malaysia was very much against Communism. China's support for the Malayan Communist Party and its refusal to recognise Malaysia's formation in 1965, and the upheaval in China during the Cultural Revolution were major obstacles to the normalisation of relations. . .
