    Abstract:

    Coming to Singapore from India back in 1955, I could only speak Hindi. Most of the people communicated with each other in Malay. It was the link language. The Chinese Singapuri (Singaporean) spoke mainly in dialects. The Chinese would speak Malay with other races. Even the Indians would communicate with each other in Malay. It was not surprising for a Tamil to speak to a Bengali or Hindi in Malay. I had to learn Malay to communicate. It was the lingua franca…
