Abstract:

This chapter identifies three classes of value-creating opportunities for environmental entrepreneurship. This is achieved with a two-stage analysis. First, answering Venkataraman’s (1997) timeless call to refine the domain of entrepreneurship research, a taxonomy of general entrepreneurial opportunity is distilled. Second, we craft a pragmatic tool that enables us to distinguish entrepreneurial opportunity that is always good for the planet from that which is only good conditionally. This framework contributes to the field by providing an organized platform for future scholarship into the overlap between entrepreneurship, opportunity, social objectives, sustainability and the natural environment.
