Chapter 6: Applications of String Methods

The methods based on string grammars and automata have a variety of applications. We shall present these methods in the succeeding sections dividing them into the following main application areas: shape and picture analysis, optical character recognition (OCR), structure analysis in bioinformatics, analysis of medical signals and images, speech recognition and natural language processing (NLP), analysis of visual events and activities (including sign language recognition and anomaly detection), signal analysis for process monitoring and control, analysis of architectural objects, feature recognition for computer aided design and manufacturing (CAD/CAM), structure analysis in chemistry, radar signal analysis, pattern recognition in seismology, pattern recognition in geology, fingerprint recognition, analysis of financial and economics time series, and image processing. A summary of these application in the tabular form is included in the last section.
