Chapter 9: Applications of Tree Methods
As we have mentioned in Chap. 2, tree languages allow us to represent much more complex structural objects/systems than do string ones. Therefore they have been applied in constructing syntactic pattern recognition methods in various application areas since the 1970s. We shall present them in the subsequent sections according to the following application areas: image analysis and processing, optical character recognition (OCR), structure analysis in bioinformatics, texture analysis, analysis of visual events and activities, pattern recognition in seismology, speech recognition and natural language processing (NLP). Similarly as in the case of string methods, the summary of these application in a tabular form is to be found in the last section.
