    Abstract:

    The quantum transfer matrix method based on the checkerboard decomposition and its application to one-dimensional spin systems are briefly reviewed. It is demonstrated that the extrapolation in the quantum limit is quite effective so that the properties at fairly low temperatures can be described by using approximations with a modest number of Trotter slicings.
