CAN FIELD EXCITATIONS PLAY THE ROLE OF DARK ENERGY?

    How the field excitations play the role of dark energy is explored. There has been the suggestion by Sahni and Wang (1999) that quintessence with rapidly oscillating modes can provide repulsive gravity and drive the cosmic acceleration. A specific model of oscillating quintessence in this scenario with less fine tuning is presented by Gu in arXiv:0711.3606. This natural model not only provides a working example, but also largely increases the feasibility of the oscillating quintessence scenario.
