FROM GENERAL ZAKHAROV-SHABAT EQUATIONS TO THE KP AND THE TODA LATTICE HIERARCHIES

Abstract
The general Zakharov-Shabat type equations without the L operators are shown to be equivalent to the KP and the Toda lattice hierarchies. That is, the Zakharov-Shabat type equations automatically guarantee the existence of the L operators.
