    Abstract:

    Dear Daniel, There have been many occasions when the pursuit of physics has provided me with moments of pure joy. One such moment occurred a few weeks ago when I read in the morning newspaper that you, the first of my graduate students to receive his Ph.D. — so to speak, my Number 1 son — had just been awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics. For that, I offer you my heartfelt congratulations. There is no higher award to be received for research in physics. My joy was enhanced by my personal belief that you should have received the prize a decade ago!
