PREFACE

This book is a reprint of a special issue of the International Journal of Pattern Recognition and Artificial Intelligence. It consists of papers that are all extensions and revisions of work presented at the SPIE Conference on Applications of Artificial Intelligence 1993: Machine Vision and Robotics, held in Orlando, Florida, 14–16 April. The papers selected for invitation to this book were identified by the conference program committee. To assure the highest possible quality for this special issue, the complete, journal-length papers were then all fully reviewed again, including a revision cycle. This produced a very tight schedule for authors and referees alike. We thank them all for adhering to the schedule and making it possible to bring this work to you in a timely manner.
