Abstract:

Spin was the final puzzle in non-relativistic quantum mechanics. In 1928 Dirac finally explained its origin when he created a relativistic wave equation—the Dirac equation—to replace the Schrödinger equation. This equation not only predicted the spin and correct magnetic moment of the electron, but also predicted the existence of a totally new particle, the positive electron or positron.
