Singapore as a Little Giant
I served as the South Korean Ambassador to Singapore for two years from 1996 to 1998. When I was appointed to that post, I thought that I would work there for three years. But a new government came into office in February 1998, many foreign mission chiefs were replaced and I was appointed to the Chancellor of the Institute of Foreign Affairs and National Security (IFANS, now the National Diplomatic Academy). Two years was too short for me to learn about Singapore. During my tenure, I had contributed a couple of essays on Singapore in the Straits Times. I still hold the same views on the political, economic and socio-cultural aspects of Singapore.
