WHEN MY SECOND term as high commissioner to Malaysia ended in April 1988, I was offered the position of an ambassador-at-large with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. I was also invited by the Institute of Southeast Asian Studies to be a Senior Research Fellow. I declined both offers.
