Lunar Image Enhancement Algorithm Using Dark Channel Prior and Histogram Equalization

    Abstract:

    A new Enhancement Algorithm of Lunar CCD Images based on the Dark Channel Prior & Histogram technology has been proposed in the paper. The Dark Channel parts of Lunar CCD Images have been detected through the Dark Channel Prior Algorithm first, and then only Dark Channel parts of images have been enhanced by Histogram Equalization technique. After combined enhanced Dark Channel parts with the other non-Dark Channel parts, a new Histogram modification technique has been designed and implemented to reduce the blocking effect in combined images. The new algorithm has been tested and results have been compared with other enhancement algorithms based on the histogram technology on Lunar CCD Images. The testing results have shown that Lunar CCD Images enhanced by the new algorithm proposed could become clearer, and the topography in the Lunar CCD Images becomes more prominent, color softer compared with results by other tested algorithms.
