Acupuncture has been widely used as a treatment for various conditions like headache and stroke, especially in Asian countries such as Korea and China. But few scientific investigations have been carried out. The aim of the present study is to investigate the effect of acupuncture on the production of inflammatory cytokines in patients with chronic headache (CH). Patients with CH were treated with acupuncture during the acute stage. Clinical signs of CH disappeared markedly after three months of treatment with acupuncture. Peripheral blood mononuclear cells obtained from a normal group and those from the patients with CH, before and after treatment with acupuncture, were cultured for 24 hours in the presence or absence of lipopolysaccharide (LPS). The amount of interleukin (IL)-1β, IL-6 and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) in LPS culture supernatant was significantly increased in the patients with CH compared to the healthy control group (p < 0.05). But those cytokines came down toward the levels of the healthy group (p < 0.05) after treatment with acupuncture, although the levels still remained elevated. Plasma cytokine levels were analyzed to evaluate any change due to acupuncture treatment. There was little difference in the levels of IL-1β or IL-6 due to the treatment with acupuncture in the patients with CH, but significantly reduced plasma levels of TNF-α were observed. These data suggest that acupuncture treatment has an inhibitory effect on pro-inflammatory cytokine production in patients with CH.

Psoriasis is a chronic inflammatory cutaneous disease characterized by clinical manifestations of erythema and white scales. The pathogenesis of psoriasis is not yet clear. Despite a combination of hormonal therapy and physiotherapy used in Western medicine, the condition often relapses after withdrawal of drugs. Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) has therapeutic features and may be a clinically effective formula by regulating unbalanced immune systems, such as by targeting interleukins. In this paper, we review recent research about how Chinese medicine immunoregulates psoriasis via interleukins, and systematically summarizes the related mechanisms. There are three common pathways leading to psoriasis: (1) Th17 cells secrete IL-17, which is stimulated by IL-23; (2) Th1 cells secrete IL-21, TNF-$\alpha$ and IFN-$\gamma$, with the help of Th17 cells; (3) Th22 cells secrete IL-22 under the stimulation of Th17 cells. Clinical and experiment data indicate that TCM could modify psoriasis by antagonizing or regulating interleukin and IL-23/IL-17 axis to inhibit the main pathways.

Some generalizations of Marchuk's model of an infectious disease with respect to the role of interleukins are presented in this paper. Basic properties of the models are studied. Results of numerical simulations with different coefficients corresponding to the different forms of the disease are shown.

A number of lines of evidence suggest that immunotherapy with the cytokine interleukin-2 (IL-2) may boost the immune response to fight HIV infection. CD4⁺ T cells, the cells which orchestrate the immune response, are also the cells that become infected by the HIV virus. These cells use cytokines as signaling mechanisms for immune-response stimulation, growth and differentiation. Since CD4⁺ T cells are hampered due to HIV infection, normal signaling, and the resulting cascade, may not occur. Introduction of IL-2 into the system can restore or enhance these effects. We illustrate, through mathematical modeling, the effects of IL-2 treatment on an HIV-infected patient. With good comparison to existing clinical data, we can better understand what mechanisms of immune-viral dynamics are necessary to produce the typical disease dynamics.
