Due to the essential difficulty of establishing an appropriate variational framework on a suitable working space, how to apply the critical point theory for showing the existence and multiplicity of periodic solutions of continuous-time difference equations remains a completely open problem. New ideas including gluing arguments are introduced in this work to overcome such a difficulty. This enables us to employ the critical point theory to construct uncountably many periodic solutions for a class of superlinear continuous-time difference equations without assuming symmetry properties on the nonlinear terms. The obtained solutions are piecewise differentiable in some cases, distinguishing continuous-time difference equations from ordinary differential equations qualitatively. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time in the literature that the critical point theory has been used for such types of problems. Our work may open an avenue for studying discrete nonlinear systems with continuous time via the critical point theory.

AIMD and RED are two dominant algorithms for controlling Internet congestion. So this paper explores the periodic solutions and complex dynamical phenomena in the state-dependent round-trip delayed AIMD/RED network congestion model with heterogeneous flows, and its improved model. We first use the semi-analytical and semi-numerical method, known as the harmonic balance method with alternating frequency/time (HB-AFT) domain technique, to derive the analytical approximations of periodic oscillations of the system. The obtained results are compared with the numerical results by WinPP, and they show good consistency. At the same time, this suggests that the method used in this paper is correct and valid. Then for the sake of making the system more realistic, we improve the model by using the hyperbolic tangent function. We obtain the approximate solutions, and find some rich dynamical behaviors of this delayed heterogeneous system, including Period-1 to torus, Period-1 to Period-2 to Period-3 motions and two kinds of mechanisms of chaos, i.e. the windows of Period-2 and Period-3 orbits to chaos, where to the best knowledge of the authors, the former route has never been reported. The periodic oscillations may induce synchronization and further congestion, where chaotic oscillation usually means that the system is unstable and may even collapse. Hence, we need to avoid these abundant dynamics discovered in this paper because they are undesirable and harmful. The derived results can help researchers better understand the performance of the AIMD/RED system, and they can be a guide for choosing parameters in a suitable range in order to maintain the network stability and optimize system performance.

Huanglongbing infection (HLB) or citrus greening and more rarely yellow shoot disease is a fatal bacterial disease of citrus. Our objective in this study is to propose a mathematical model to predict the outbreak of Huanglongbing (HLB) infection with Logistic growth in psyllid insect vectors to predict the transmission of this disease among citrus. Indeed, we considered the periodic environment to model the seasonality of the spread of the disease. In this regard, an explicit expression of the reproductive number $R_0$ is obtained, which has been used for analyzing the behavior of the model in the cases when $R_0>1$ and $R_0<1$. The mathematical findings are supported using numerical illustrations.

In this work, we study second-order Hamiltonian systems under small perturbations. We assume that the main term of the system has a mountain pass structure, but do not suppose any condition on the perturbation. We prove the existence of a periodic solution. Moreover, we show that periodic solutions of perturbed systems converge to periodic solutions of the unperturbed systems if the perturbation tends to zero. The assumption on the potential that guarantees the mountain pass geometry of the corresponding action functional is of independent interest as it is more general than those by Rabinowitz [Homoclinic orbits for a class of Hamiltonian systems, Proc. R. Soc. Edinburgh A 114 (1990) 33–38] and the authors [M. Izydorek and J. Janczewska, Homoclinic solutions for a class of the second-order Hamiltonian systems, J. Differ. Equ. 219 (2005) 375–389].
