This empirical study contributes to extend the literature on the nexus between energy consumption, financial development, economic growth, and urbanization in Pakistan. We use annual time series data covering the year from 1970 to 2018 and employ the Autoregressive Distributive lag (ARDL) and Granger causality test. The results of the ARDL-bound test confirm cointegration between the variables, as the null hypothesis of no cointegration is rejected. Further, the long-run results show that financial development and urbanization have positive correlation with energy demand. However, economic growth is negatively correlated with energy consumption. Similarly, in the short run, the financial market and urbanization stimulated energy demand. However, economic growth is insignificant with energy consumption. Besides that, a bidirectional relationship is noted between urbanization and energy consumption. Based on the finding, this empirical study suggests that policymakers and government should revisit their policies regarding economic growth, explore alternative sources of energy, and try to shift towards renewable energy, which is cheaper and eco-friendly.

Assessment of energy and environmental issues has received a special focus due to global warming and climate vulnerabilities. Energy, environment and economic development simultaneously yielded a combined effect, which is favorable from the economic point of view while unfavorable for environmental aspects. It is necessary to measure the energy, economic and environmental performance with appropriate methods. Therefore, this study measures the energy security and environmental efficiency. Data used in this study were collected from the official website of International Energy Agency (IEA), British Petroleum (BP) and World Bank. We employ a non-radial DEA technology for assessing energy and environmental efficiency for OECD countries. Results reveal that the values of energy intensity range from 0.93 to 0.30, while GHG emission per capita values range from 24.61 to 5.28. As far as energy efficiency is concerned, Iceland and Greece have the highest value (0.99) of energy efficiency, whereas Ireland has the lowest value (0.34) of energy efficiency. Further analysis shows that Austria, Australia, Portugal and Spain have values between 0.70 and 0.80 for energy intensity, whereas UK, Sweden, Germany and the USA have values of energy intensity, between 0.40 and 0.50. The study proposes some valuable policy implications for policy and decision-makers to make the environment more sustainable.

This paper proposes a new tri-objective scheduling algorithm called Heterogeneous Reliability-Driven Energy-Efficient Duplication-based (HRDEED) algorithm for heterogeneous multiprocessors. The goal of the algorithm is to minimize the makespan (schedule length) and energy consumption, while maximizing the reliability of the generated schedule. Duplication has been employed in order to minimize the makespan. There is a strong interest among researchers to obtain high-performance schedules that consume less energy. To address this issue, the proposed algorithm incorporates energy consumption as an objective. Moreover, in order to deal with processor and link failures, a system reliability model is proposed. The three objectives, i.e., minimizing the makespan and energy, while maximizing the reliability, have been met by employing a method called Technique for Order Preference by Similarity to an Ideal Solution (TOPSIS). TOPSIS is a popular Multi-Criteria Decision-Making (MCDM) technique that has been employed to rank the generated Pareto optimal schedules. Simulation results demonstrate the capability of the proposed algorithm in generating short, energy-efficient and reliable schedules. Based on simulation results, we observe that HRDEED algorithm demonstrates an improvement in both the energy consumption and reliability, with a reduced makespan. Specifically, it has been shown that the energy consumption can be reduced by 5–47%, and reliability can be improved by 1–5% with a 1–3% increase in makespan.

The Underwater Acoustic Sensor Network (UASN) plays a dynamic role in various application extents like surveillance, military, terrestrial networks and industrial application. In UASN, each Underwater Sensor Node (USN) is deployed in many places. The multiple paths are always used for transmitting data from USN to the Sink Node (SN). Each sensor constitutes a set of small devices and a small battery. If data is received from multiple nodes at the same time then, there is a chance for a collision and also it will bring down network lifetime. In recent years, only a few research works are done in fuzzy based routing in UASN. For increasing the network’s lifetime, there is always a need for an optimum routing path in UASN with improved parameters related to propagation delay, energy and throughput. The present paper proposes the Fuzzy Logic Depth based Energy-Aware Routing (FLDEAR) path in UASN. A static USN was utilized in the proposed system. Each USN is assigned a Priority Number (PN) by the SN. The PN is used for avoiding collision in the proposed model. The simulation is conducted employing Aqua-Sim (AS) which is based on Network Simulator-2(NS2). The simulation results illustrate that this system outperforms the existing routing protocol such as protocols of Energy Efficient Cooperative Opportunistic Routing (EECOR), Fuzzy Depth Based Routing (FDBR) and Depth Based Routing (DBR) in terms of improved parameters related to energy, propagation delay and throughput. Finally, the lifetime of UASN is improved by 70–80% by the implementation of the proposed FLDEAR protocol.

China has launched a set of policies and projects to address climate change, one of the most serious problems in the world. This paper reviews the Chinese policies and national plans on the encouragement of environmentally beneficial and energy-saving innovations. Policies on the energy industry and the development of new energy vehicle industry are taken as cases to illustrate in detail the Chinese policies on climate change. The research reveals that actions on the low carbon innovation, such as the innovation on new energy vehicles, not only benefit the dealing with climate change, but also contribute to the strategies of catching up advanced countries.

Technology assessment is an important component for effective technology management (TM) and occurs in initial technology life-cycle phases. However, technology assessment practices have largely evolved in developed countries. Current technology assessment methods also do not consider social-ecological complexity, which is important if the sustainability of technologies is to be assessed; this is especially true of energy systems in developing countries. This paper subsequently investigates how the understanding of the principles of sustainability science may lead to better assessment practices that can be used upfront, in the TM cycle, by policy- and decision-makers of renewable energy technologies in the African context.

Industrial integration becomes more and more attractive to practitioners in industry, and draws a lot of attention from academia as well. However, the discussion of industrial integration is inconsistent, diversified, and targeted at different prospects. This paper attempts to address a systematic and comprehensive review on 74 articles about industrial integration from 2006 to 2016 in the SCI/SSCI database, in order to present an overview to researchers and practitioners. We will clarify current trends and main findings, and framework, strategies, and case analyses as well. The selected papers are diversified into seven research potential outlets. Summarization and research directions for each outlet are examined. Depending on the selected articles, European countries are the major contributed countries focusing on practical or technological issues regarding industrial integration.

Day by day, with the improved per capita demand and increasing population, energy requirements are increasing globally. Big organizations are trying to develop zero energy establishments by using solar rooftop systems and by following green building norms. This paper proposes to utilize the kinetic energy of water falling in high-rise buildings for the generation of electricity. This study proposes the idea of extracting electric power from falling water in high-rise buildings. A 15m high building is considered for the study, having sufficient water head to run a micro-hydro turbine. Hydraulic turbines are stationed at each storey of the building, which employs the water energy for the generation of electricity. Analytically, the suggested setup is commercially propitious for several major cities of the country. The economic review of the suggested setup is discussed for possible commercialization of the idea.

The chapter focuses on the energy transition as a necessary prerequisite for developing a green economy. The features of the new energy transition are based on the introduction and use of clean technologies, such as renewable energy and hydrogen. The urgency of taking drastic measures to transition to green energy is connected with the speedy solution to climate problems on the planet. The countries are actively taking measures to decarbonize economic processes; businesses are adopting business strategies that include reducing the negative impact on the environment and introducing green technologies. The paper analyzes current trends in the energy sector to identify the readiness of a new energy transition to the principles of a green economy.
