This study proposes a novel refined differential quadrature finite element (DQFE) framework for the size-dependent dynamic analysis of thick quadrilateral microplates, incorporating couple-stress effect and two kinematic variables. The proposed methodology addresses inter-element compatibility through fifth-order differential quadrature geometric mapping while achieving geometric adaptability via global-local coordinate transformation. Detailed procedures for assembling element matrices and imposing boundary conditions are provided. Validation through representative quadrilateral plate configurations confirms the efficacy of the proposed framework, with particular success in modeling asymmetric trapezoidal plates through experimental correlation. The enhanced DQFE framework further elucidates fundamental mechanisms governing cyclic quadrilateral microplate dynamics by systematically investigating three critical factors: material length scale parameters (MLSP), thickness-to-length ratios, and boundary constraint configurations. Mode localization characteristics are quantitatively assessed using the mode assurance criterion. The principal conclusions reveal: (1) Superior convergence characteristics of the fifty-degree-of-freedom DQFE formulation compared to conventional lower-order implementations; (2) Emergence of mode-transition phenomena driven by central angle variations; (3) Differential sensitivity of critical mode-transition angles to MLSP variations under contrasting boundary constraint intensities; (4) Characteristic modification of vibration mode contours induced by size-dependent effects.

This paper presents a theoretical analysis of the effects of a magnetic field, couple stress fluid, and slip velocity on squeeze film lubrication between a sphere and a flat plate. The modified Reynolds equation is derived using Stokes micro continuum theory of couple stress fluids. The nondimensional governing equations of the flow model are solved analytically for pressure, load-carrying capacity and squeezing time. The results are graphically presented and analyzed for various parameters. The study shows that the couple stress parameter and magnetic field significantly enhance the film pressure, load-carrying capacity, and squeeze film time compared to the Newtonian and nonmagnetic cases. Also from the results, it is observed that the squeeze film properties can be significantly reduced by the effect of the slip parameter.

The motivation of this paper is to explore an oscillatory flow of a magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) couple stress fluid with heat and mass transfer analyses through a porous medium. The modified Darcy–Brinkman couple stress fluid model is employed. There could be many potential applications of this study, such as thermal system, solidification of liquid crystals, cooling of metallic plates in a bath, exotic lubricants and colloidal solutions. In the wake of these potential applications, the study of MHD couple stress fluid flow with additional diffusing components has been found to be innovative and very interesting in the analysis of the influence of combined magnetic effects, couple stress fluid and two solutes. A governing coupled nonlinear partial differential equation with boundary constraints represents the modeled flow problem. In addition, these equations are converted into nondimensional form by employing the suitable nondimensionalizing quantities. It is possible to attain analytic solutions to the dimensionless equations that control the liquid flow, and the consequences of the flow’s confines on velocity, temperature, concentration and skin friction profile are examined and also the results are discussed through graphs. It is noteworthy that when the injection level on the heated plate is increased, the skin friction on each channel plate also increases.

The effect of surface roughness, magnetic field, and couple stress on the performance of secant slider bearing is studied in this paper. The effectiveness of the bearing is assessed by using a couple stress liquid as the lubricant in the process. Because of microstructural impacts, couple stress fluids have distinctive rheological characteristics. These features have the potential to make a major impact on the bearing’s performance. The novel aspect of this study is that the roughness of the secant slider is taken into consideration. The modified Reynolds equation is derived using Christensen’s stochastic theory for roughness. Here, both transverse and longitudinal roughness patterns are considered. The analytical solutions are obtained for steady-state pressure, load-carrying capacity, film stiffness, and damping coefficient. The results are presented for various parameters through graphs and tables. The combined effect of the magnetic field and couple stress is significant on bearing characteristics. It is noticed that the bearing features increase with the longitudinal roughness parameter, and the reverse phenomenon is observed with the transverse roughness parameter. When a transverse roughness pattern is assumed on a secant slider bearing, characteristics like pressure, load, stiffness of the film, and damping coefficient increase significantly.

In this research, the combined effect of magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) and slip velocity on squeeze film lubrication of long cylinders and infinite plates with couple stress fluid has been studied. Combining the Stokes couple stress theory and the Lorentz force theory yields analytical solutions for the modified Reynolds equation. Using the Reynolds equation, the mathematical expressions for squeeze film pressure, load-carrying capacity and squeeze film time are obtained. The pressure, load carrying capacity and squeeze film time increase with the combined effect of MHD, couple stress fluids and slip velocity.

This study explores the thermodynamic behavior of a reactive hydromagnetic liquid flowing through permeable materials, with convective cooling applied to the walls. This study holds practical significance in optimization of thermal management systems and it is crucial for enhancing the efficiency of controlling thermal runaway. The flow is modeled as a system of partial differential equations which are numerically solved. The modified Adomian Decomposition Method and Pade approximation technique are utilized in solving the equations. The results acquired for velocity and temperature distributions are thereby employed to estimate entropy generation rate with critical values over numerous effects of various boundaries over improvement of thermal runaway utilizing Pade approximation technique to show the significant impact of convective cooling term (Biot number) and other thermophysical parameters on the fluid flow. The outcomes show that fluid velocity continuously increases with rising values of inverse couple stress and fluid temperature increases Biot number.

A mathematical model has been developed in this paper with an aim to study arterial blood flow in a vibration environment. Blood is treated as a couple stress fluid. Oscillatory flow in a porous channel is considered in the study, when the flow takes place under the action of an external pressure gradient. The fluid flows between two porous plates lying parallel to each other. The fluid is considered to be injected on one plate with a constant velocity. The plates are considered to be oscillating with the same frequency in their own planes. However, the plate velocity of single-harmonic oscillation is not constant. The effects of various parameters representing couple stress, suction and magnitude of the oscillating pressure gradient on the velocity profile and wall shear stress are discussed. It is found that the presence of couple stress in the fluid enhances the velocity of the fluid in both axial and transverse directions, while a reverse phenomenon is observed for the wall shear stress.

Of concern in the paper is the development of a mathematical model of blood flow in the microcirculatory system. The study pertains to a situation, where the system is subject to the action of an external AC electric field and the flow is oscillatory. The general case when the frequency of the electric field is different from that of the flow has been studied. Blood is treated as a couple stress fluid. The flow is supposed to take place between two oscillatory plates and is considered to be of electro-osmotic type. Our study is aimed at examining the effect of couple stress at different frequencies of the capillary wall and the applied AC electric field on electroosmotic flow of blood. The computational results indicate very clearly that the electrokinetic velocity of blood reduces as the couple stress effect increases and that the velocity reduces, when the Reynolds number rises. The results of the present study will serve as a reasonably good estimate for electro-osmotic transport of blood in small blood vessels.

A model based on a modified couple stress theory for the free vibration and buckling analyses of beams is presented. The model also incorporates the Poisson's effect and allows the analysis of Timoshenko beams with any arbitrary end boundary condition. The natural frequencies and buckling loads are computed using the Ritz method. Parametric studies show that, while the natural frequencies and the buckling loads increase monotonically with the increase of the material length scale, they present a minimum in certain values of the Poisson's ratio. A study relating the classical elasticity and the couple stress strain energies is also presented. By establishing this relation, explicit formulas to obtain the natural frequencies and buckling loads, in which the couple stress and Poisson's effects are accounted for, in terms of the buckling loads of the classical elasticity are found. These formulas, which are valid when the shear strain and stress are zero, allow an expedite computation of natural frequencies and buckling loads of beams with couple stress and Poisson's effect.

A new functionally graded non-classical Timoshenko microbeam model is developed by using a variational formulation. The new model incorporates strain gradient, couple stress (rotation gradient) and velocity gradient effects and explains a power-law variation of two-phase materials through the thickness direction. The new model contains three additional material constants to account for the relative three gradient effects. The static bending, buckling and free vibration problems of the newly developed functionally graded material (FGM) beam are then analytically solved. Numerical results show that the differences between the prediction results of the current model and the classic model are significant when FGM beam thickness is very small, but they are diminishing as the thickness increases.

In this paper, the formulations of the couple stress based flexoelectric theory in orthogonal curvilinear coordinates are presented. By following the two rules of transforming tensor equations from Cartesian coordinates to curvilinear ones: replacing the partial differentiation symbol with the covariant differentiation symbol and ensuring that the identical indices are positioned diagonally, the governing equations, constitutive equations and boundary conditions in orthogonal curvilinear coordinates are obtained. Then the couple stress based flexoelectric theory is specified for cylindrical coordinates. The flexoelectric responses of an infinitely long dielectric cylinder under a uniform electric field are analyzed. Numerical results show that the radial displacement increases rapidly as the mechanical length scale parameter $l_1$ increases. When $l_1$ is larger than 5$\mu$m, the circumferential displacement decreases rapidly. $l_1$ has a large effect on the induced displacements but a small effect on the induced electric potential, while the electrical length scale parameter $\beta$ has a small effect on both the induced displacements and the induced electric potential.
