| World Scientific Launched 50 Years of Social Issues in Singapore Singapore Management University (SMU) Professor David Chan's latest book, 50 Years of Social Issues in Singapore, was co-launched by World Scientific and SMU along with his other book People Matter, also published by World Scientific, on 30 April.
The book draws insights from 22 other contributors including Ambassador-at-large Professor Tommy Koh, Member of Parliament Mohamad Maliki Bin Osman, Former CEO of HDB and URA Liu Thai Ker, and Senior Research Fellow Gillian Koh, amongst others, on the social issues that the nation faces. In his foreword, Singapore Deputy Prime Minister Tharman Shanmugaratnam commended the book being a "most worthwhile endeavour", bringing together "a distinguished team of thinkers and scholars to examine and reflect on a range of critical social issues that have received wide public and policy attention in Singapore." "A good understanding of the various social issues", said Singapore Management University (SMU) Professor David Chan (above), "will facilitate effective policy-making and constructive public actions." Professor Chan also opined that Singapore's advantageous position could be partly attributed to its cohesive approach on social issues ranging from social mobility, racial and religious harmony, community building, and ageing population. Social progress, he noted, was a potpourri of issues of inclusivity, including social mobility, developing communities and giving attention to marginal groups.
Singapore Education Minister Heng Swee Keat (centre above) who was the Guest-of-Honour at the launch, noted that the late Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew had one key test for social policies and that was, "Does it work?". Minister Heng also highlighted the importance of analysing issues based on evidence while being rooted in values and looking ahead into the future. This would result in the improvement of the people's welfare and a building of a fair and just society for all. Minister Heng concluded his speech by looking ahead that the shaping of Singapore would require "resilience, resourcefulness, responsibility and service to Singapore", the very values that drove the pioneer leaders of the nation. The event was covered by local and foreign news agencies including the Straits Times, Lianhe Zaobao, Channel 8 News, ChannelNewsAsia, Xinhua News Agency. | | SG50 Book on Women Issues Launched: Our Lives to Live: Putting a Woman's Face to Change in Singapore World Scientific launched the second book of its 50 Years of Nation-building series, Our Lives to Live: Putting a Woman's Face to Change in Singapore, on 13 May. The book explores and documents how women's roles, choices, and voices in Singapore have changed in the last 50 years. Among the authors are some of Singapore's most accomplished women in many different fields - Speaker of Parliament Halimah Yacob, political scientist and diplomat Chan Heng Chee, global women's activist Noeleen Heyzer, sociologist and politician Aline Wong, food ambassador Violet Oon, sports legend Pat Chan, law lecturer and playwright Eleanor Wong, and novelist Meira Chand. In her foreword, Minister Grace Fu (below left) commended the book for having a "range of views" reflecting "the diversity, depth and strength of women in Singapore."
Ms Doreen Liu, Group Managing Director, World Scientific (below right) announced that to mark Singapore's 50 years of Nation Building, "World Scientific is set to publish a series of books on various areas of our nation's development." She expressed in her speech that "50 percent of our country's population are women, and over 50 percent of Singapore women have tertiary education. Without a volume on women's issues, this series would be incomplete!" Minister Grace Fu (above left) who was also the Guest-of-Honour at the launch encouraged family members, employers, and the community to support women so as to "r educe the work-family trade-off that women face". This would help women balance their time between work and family and achieve their goals and aspirations. Minister Fu concluded her speech by acknowledging the contribution of Singapore women, young and old, to the nation through important ways such as businesswomen, entrepreneurs, artistes, sportswomen, firewomen.
