Vortex-induced vibration (VIV) of flexible or rigid cylindrical structures commonly occurs in the field of deep-water oil extraction and civil engineering, one of the main effects of this vibration is to shorten the structural durability. Therefore, there is great interest in the development of tools to estimate the characteristics of VIV, and to evaluate its effect on the fatigue of structures and their life expectancy. In addition, studies examining the potential of nonlinear characteristics to aid in VIV or flow-induced vibration-based energy harvesting devices are widely concerned, allowing the hypothetical energy harvester to operate at high performance over a much larger range of Reynolds number than a standard system. The underlying mechanisms on instability and self-excited vibrations still need further explorations for better understand, prediction, control and utilization of VIV or flow-induced vibrations.
This special issue aims to publish original research papers on the latest advances in flow-induced vibrations such as VIV, galloping and flutter of structures, and reviews that describe the current state of the art. Potential topics in the broad area of nonlinear vibrations include but are not limited to:
As Guest Editors, we invite you to submit your work to our special issue for potential publication in International Journal of Ocean and Coastal Engineering (IJOCE). All submitted work will be peer-reviewed by our committee.
