Particle methods have become an important numerical tool for scientific research and industrial applications. Thanks to the meshfree and Lagrangian characteristics, particle methods have been widely applied in ocean and coastal engineering owning to their ability to model large deformations of free surface and fluid interfaces, fragmentation, moving/deformable boundaries, multi-physics interactions, etc. For example, particle methods are considered to be ideal approach for simulating breaking waves and their interaction with ocean/coastal structures. Recently, particle methods have also been extended to modeling of complex turbulence flows with high Reynolds numbers.
Nevertheless, to further utilize particle methods for coastal and ocean engineering applications, theoretical and numerical aspects still need to be improved for addressing some numerical challenges including consistency, accuracy, efficiency, boundary conditions, adaptivity, coupling with other methods, etc. Particle methods with high-performance parallel computing is also rapidly developing towards industrial applications.
This special issue aims to provide a platform for academic and industrial communities to present novel research on particle methods and their recent applications in ocean and coastal engineering. Potential topics of this special issue include, but are not limited to:
