Special Issue on Hydro-Climate Extremes and Impacts in East Europe

The Journal of Extreme Events invites submissions for a special issue on the topic of "Hydro-Climate Extremes and Impacts in East Europe." This special issue aims to evaluate the impacts of extreme weather and climate impacts on urban populations, water resources, and agriculture in East Europe. Cross-cutting tools and techniques for producing climate change scenarios and impact assessment will also be covered. We welcome high-quality research papers, case studies, and reviews that contribute new knowledge about the climate risks and opportunities faced by this relatively under-studied but highly vulnerable region.

Background and scope

Hydro-climate extremes and their local impacts on society and the environment are rarely studied outside of Northwest Europe and North America. This collection of papers would literally be “filling in blank spaces” on maps of climate extremes and impacts – especially in the region of the Western Balkans. Given the importance of agriculture to the regional economy, there are growing concerns about the impacts of past and projected climate change on soils, water availability, and crop production. The summer 2023 Mediterranean region heatwaves, wildfires, and flash floods also highlighted the vulnerability of other key sectors such as human health, tourism and the built environment to extreme weather. This special issue seeks to cover the impacts of climate extremes on East Europe, including but not limited to:

  • Detection of changes in the frequency, intensity and duration of extreme events and their socio-economic impacts in East Europe.
  • Understanding the conditions, drivers and impacts of extreme events on natural systems in East Europe.
  • Tools and techniques for generating high-resolution climate change scenarios.
  • Projections of extreme events and climate impacts on East Europe.
  • Climate risk assessment for vulnerable sectors such agriculture, built and natural environment, human health, and water.
  • Communication of climate risks, resilience concepts, and adaptation opportunities to decision-makers and public audiences.
Contributions exploring other related topics are also welcome. We encourage interdisciplinary approaches and research that bridges the gap between climate science and decision making.
