Some snippets of the book reviews and articles on Tall Order... |
Tall Order was reviewed by Nicholas Yong on Yahoo Singapore, and here's what he had to say about the book, "Written in a spare, unadorned style befitting of Peh's previous profession, Tall Order nevertheless provides some fascinating insights into the man who served as PM from 1990-2004, and who was thought by an old schoolmate to be too "shy" to join politics. While the various revelations of the book — Lee Wei Ling was suggested as a political candidate by her father, for example — have been written about extensively by various media outlets, it is Goh's sometimes complicated relationship with the late Lee — "my mentor, master and teacher" — that is the beating heart of the narrative. It stretches all the way back to 1958, when Goh first met him as a schoolboy. As Goh puts it, "How I survived working under him is more than a matter of curious interest." Sharing about his journey as a politician at the book launch event of Tall Order: The Goh Chok Tong Story (Volume 1), ESM Goh shared: "I had my knuckles rapped, more than once. Only when they were satisfied that I could fly Singapore was I allowed to occupy the cockpit." He added that Singapore is now in the midst of another "generational political transition", and that "This requires painstaking preparation and testing in all aspects - in policies and politics, in taking hard decisions, in fighting and winning elections, in winning the minds and hearts of the people, in forging good relations with leaders of other countries and in bonding as a team." At a charity launch event for Tall Order: The Goh Chok Tong Story (Volume 1) to raise funds for the two charities, Marine Parade Leadership Foundation and Today Enable fund, both of which are founded by ESM Goh himself, he gave his take on meritocracy. "I had equal opportunities to study, compete, get a job and do well on my own steam. Many in my generation similarly enjoyed meritocracy and social mobility that was put in place by the Government and nurtured by society. Many of you here walked that journey too. But meritocracy cannot be left to its own devices. We must constantly adjust to maintain an open system with opportunities for all Singaporeans to advance themselves." At the event, ESM Goh raised more than S$2 million, all of which will go to the two charities he founded. Additionally, all royalties from the sales of this book will also go to the two charities. Tall Order: The Goh Chok Tong Story (Volume 1) was recently reviewed on the South China Morning Post, attaining a whopping 4 stars out of 5. Here's what the reviewer, Ajah Singh had to say about the book: "Goh's biography combines an accessible narrative style with lightly worn but meticulously researched journalism. No date has yet been set for the second volume, which will focus on the 13 years of Goh's premiership to the present day. The sequel promises to be a compelling read, especially if it's as energetic in its aspirations as the first volume." Read the full review of Tall Order: The Goh Chok Tong Story (Volume 1) here. |

About the Book... |
Goh Chok Tong was an improbable Prime Minister for an unlikely country. He had neither the connections nor the cunning to rise to the top, and was even once famously derided by his mentor Lee Kuan Yew for being 'wooden' in his communication skills. Except for an imposing height most unusual in this part of the world, he was an ordinary man. He lost his father at a young age, lived in a two-bedroom public flat with his mother and four siblings and needed a government bursary to complete university.
Yet somehow he succeeded. Tall Order tells the extraordinary story of his life and career over half a century, revealing how Singapore's second Prime Minister rose through a combination of strength, wit and a political nous which many, including himself, did not know he had. In this first of two volumes, Goh navigated years of a challenging apprenticeship to Lee, scoring numerous policy successes but also suffering political blows and humiliation. He was the man who first made Neptune Orient Lines, Singapore's national carrier, profitable, before entering politics. The stellar corporate stint was followed by his many novel policies and institutions that have since become household names in the country: Medisave, Total Defence, Residents' Committee and Nominated Member of Parliament. But the highlights were counterposed by setbacks, including overseeing the People's Action Party's first electoral defeat after independence at the Anson by-election. In the hands of acclaimed author and journalist Peh Shing Huei, this authorised biography reveals the private deliberations and negotiations between Goh and Lee before the maiden leadership transfer of independent Singapore. Tall Order is the first biography of Goh. This riveting book offers rare insights into Singapore's biggest and most important political and economic stories. |
How did you know that you were not a seat warmer? |
It was interaction and confidence in him [Lee Kuan Yew]. If I suspected that he was just putting me to be seat warmer for his son, and just for two, three years, what is the point? Then I would have said 'let us find a way for Lee Hsien Loong to take over from you.' There was no need to have me. There was no point. But I never worried about the seat warmer joke. In my heart, I knew that Lee Kuan Yew never meant for me to be a seat warmer. Politicians must have some thick skin and be able to laugh it off because in my view, that is not what Lee Kuan Yew regarded me as. You must have self-respect. If Lee Kuan Yew used me for his own purpose, then what is the point for me? History would laugh at you, isn't it? I have the self-confidence. I was prepared to do the job and I knew he was honest with me, with my strength and weaknesses. |
