A Guide to Vibration-free Environments for Advanced Technologies & Scientific Experiments
New book teaches proper application of state-of-the-art means for controlling harmful vibrations

Vibration presents a major challenge to advanced technological processes and experiments in engineering, physics, and life sciences that rely on optics and optoelectronics. It affects the daily work of numerous professionals – from optical engineers to astronomers to biologists to surgeons. As optical methods gain an ever-expanding role in science and technology, knowledge of methods and devices for reducing adverse vibration becomes indispensable for professionals interacting with optics and optoelectronics.

Vibration Control for Optomechanical Systems was written by Dr. Vyacheslav M. Ryaboy based on his twenty-five years of experience designing, testing, and analyzing vibration control products and applications in the context of optomechanics. It discusses ways in which vibration may affect optical performance and describes methods and means of reducing this impact. Principal methods of vibration control, namely, damping and isolation, are explained using mathematical models and real-life examples. Vibration measurements and environmental standards are presented as applicable to optomechanical systems. State-of-the-art vibration control systems are reviewed, including pneumatic and elastomeric isolators, damping treatments and active control systems. The contents cover some topics that are important for optomechanical applications but are not included in general vibration texts, such as dynamics and stability of elastically supported systems with high centers of gravity, physics of pneumatic isolators, and application of dynamic absorbers to vibration-isolated systems.

“When I started teaching vibration control as part of University of California Irvine Certificate programs in Optical Engineering and Optical Instrument Design, it became clear that there was no textbook suitable for the students,” says Dr. Ryaboy. “Engineers and researchers creating and using advanced optomechanical instrumentation who desired to master vibration issues affecting their work would have to look for information scattered across a wide array of technical literature.” This book fills the gaps and provides a compact source of basic facts and methods underlying vibration control techniques, including their application, design principles, modeling and analysis, testing and troubleshooting, as related to optomechanical systems.

The book appeals to a wide circle of professionals, academics, researchers, and students in mechanical engineering, acoustics, optics, systems engineering and control. It may serve as a textbook for undergraduate or graduate level courses in vibration control and optomechanics.

About the Author

Vyacheslav M “Slava” Ryaboy is a Fellow at MKS Instruments Light and Motion Division (Newport Corporation) in Irvine, CA. He played the leading role in the development of multiple vibration control product lines. He teaches a class on Vibration Control with the University of California, Irvine Continuing Education. He is the author of a monograph on optimal vibration isolation, numerous papers and inventions. He holds PhD and Doctor of Sciences degrees from Lomonosov Moscow State University.
