Analysis and Applications

The aim of this paper is to study the asymptotic behavior of a structure made of plates of thickness 2δ when δ → 0. This study is carried out within the frame of linear elasticity by using the unfolding method. It is based on several decompositions of displacements of the structure and on the passing to the limit in fixed domains.

We begin by studying the displacements of a plate. We show that any displacement is the sum of an elementary displacement concerning the normal lines on the middle surface of the plate and a warping. An elementary displacement is linear with respect to the variable x₃. It is written where is a displacement of the mid-surface of the plate. We show a priori estimates and convergence results when δ → 0. We characterize the limits of the unfolded displacements of a plate as well as the limits of the unfolded strained tensor.

Then, we extend these results to structures made of plates. We show that any displacement of a structure is the sum of an elementary displacement of each plate and of a residual displacement. The elementary displacements of the structure (e.p.s.d.) coincide with elementary rod displacements in the junctions. Any e.p.s.d. is given by two functions belonging to H¹(S; ℝ³) where S is the skeleton of the structure (the set formed by the mid-surfaces of the plates constituting the surface). One of these functions, , is the skeleton displacement. We show that is the sum of an extensional displacement and of an inextensional one. The first one characterizes the membrane displacements and the second one is a rigid displacement in the direction of the plates and it characterizes the flexion of the plates.

Eventually, we pass to the limit as δ → 0 in the linearized elasticity system. On the one hand, we obtain a variational problem that is satisfied by the limit extensional displacement, and on the other hand, a variational problem satisfied by the limit of inextensional displacements.

In this paper, we address learning rates for the density level detection (DLD) problem. We begin by proving a "No Free Lunch Theorem" showing that rates cannot be obtained in general. Then, we apply a recently established classification framework to obtain rates for DLD support vector machines under mild assumptions on the density.

The behavior of a thin film made of a ferromagnetic material in the absence of an external magnetic field is described by an energy depending on the magnetization of the film verifying the saturation constraint. The free energy consists of an induced magnetostatic energy and an energy term with density including the exchange energy and the anisotropic energy. We study the behavior of this energy when the thickness of the curved film goes to zero. We show that the minimizers of the free energy converge to the minimizers of a local energy depending on a two-dimensional magnetization by Γ-convergence arguments.

The problem of proving generalization bounds for the performance of learning algorithms can be formulated as a problem of bounding the bias and variance of estimators of the expected error. We show how various stability assumptions can be employed for this purpose. We provide a necessary and sufficient stability condition for bounding the bias and variance for the Empirical Risk Minimization algorithm, and various sufficient conditions for bounding bias and variance of estimators for general algorithms. We discuss settings in which it is possible to obtain exponential bounds, and we prove an extension of the bounded-difference inequality for "almost always" stable algorithms.

We investigate the existence and properties of traveling wave solutions for the hyperbolic-elliptic system of conservation laws describing the dynamics of van der Waals fluids. The model is based on a constitutive equation of state containing two inflection points and incorporates nonlinear viscosity and capillarity terms. A global description of the traveling wave solutions is provided. We distinguish between classical and non-classical trajectories and, for the latter, the existence and properties of kinetic functions is investigated. An earlier work in this direction (cf. [4]) was restricted to dealing with one inflection point only. Specifically, given any left-hand state and any shock speed (within some admissible range), we prove the existence of a non-classical traveling wave for a sequence of parameter values representing the ratio of viscosity and capillarity. Our analysis exhibits a surprising lack of monotonicity of traveling waves. The behavior of these non-classical trajectories is also investigated numerically.
