Memory impairment is one of the most frustrating problems for older people. Several acupoints were used for the treatment of memory loss in old rats, and the elemental mechanism of acupuncture therapy was studied with Inductively Coupled Plasma Spectroscopy. The result indicates that acupuncture improves learning and memory ability significantly in aged animals when compared with controls. This study demonstrated that elevations of eight essential elements (B, Ca, Cu, Fe, K, Mg, Na, and P) in the brain are the ionic basis for the therapeutic effect of acupuncture. A hypothetical model of the mechanism of acupuncture therapy is described.

It is known from previous work that acupuncture stimulation modifies the somesthetic afferent to different extents depending on the acupoint studied. In this study, somatosensory evoked potentials of 21 healthy volunteers are recorded. When acupoint LI-4 (Hoku) is stimulated, it produces noticeable modifications, with a significant increase of latency and decrease of amplitude of the peaks which reflect the primary cortical afferent. Comparison of these results with the absence of changes when the experiment is repeated by stimulating a non-acupuncture point, ensures that the effects observed depend on the special quality of the acupuncture point stimulated and not on the mere repetitive stimulation on the skin.

The efficacy of ear electroacupuncture on appetite and weight control was investigated in 3 separate studies. Part I: The Stomach, Hunger, or placebo ear points were stimulated in three different groups. Stimulating the Stomach, or Hunger, points was significantly more effective in appetite control than stimulating the placebo points. Part II: Stimulation of 3 pairs of ear points (Stomach, Hunger, and Shen Men) was performed on 61 obese subjects for 8 weeks. Only 43 subjects engaged, in addition, in an exercise program. 79% of the subjects succeeded to follow a low calorie diet for 8 weeks with subsequent weight reduction. Active exercises significantly increased weight loss. Part III: 19 obese patients with knee osteoarthritis participated in electroacupuncture, diet, and exercise program and 89% of them lost 5-10 kg in 8 weeks.

The effect of Qigong training on proportions of T lymphocyte subsets was investigated in human peripheral blood. We observed that the ratio of CD4+/CD8+ T lymphocytes was increased as much as 50% in a trainee group who practiced Qigong training more than 5 months compared to a normal healthy group who did not practice. The absolute number of CD4+ T lymphocytes was also elevated in trainee group with 100 cells/mm³ more than in normal healthy group. The positive correlation between the ratio of CD4+/CD8+ T lymphocytes and the ratio of CD4+45RA-/CD4+ CD45RA+ T lymphocytes was shown in the trainee group. In contrast, there was a negative correlation between the ratio of CD4+/CD8+ T lymphocytes and the ratio of CD8+CD57+/CD8+CD57- T lymphocytes in the trainee group. The data indicate that Qigong training affects the profile of lymphocyte subsets in human peripheral blood, especially the proportion of CD4+ T lymphocytes.

This study determined the effect of massage on oxygen consumption at rest. Ten healthy, adult males (mean age = 28 years) volunteered to serve as subjects. During the Control Session, each subject was placed in the supine position on a massage table to remain motionless for 30 minutes. During the Treatment Session, each subject received a 30-minute sports massage of the lower extremities. Oxygen consumption was determined via the Beckman Metabolic Measurement Cart, which was upgraded to estimate cardiac output using the CO₂ rebreathing (equilibrium) method. Paired t-tests were used for all tests of statistical significance. There was no significant difference in the subjects' oxygen consumption with the massage. Also, there were no significant differences in heart rate, stroke volume, cardiac output, and arteriovenous oxygen difference during the massage. These findings indicate (1) that massaging the lower extremities results in neither an increase nor a decrease in the subjects' expenditure of energy at rest and (2) that the energy cost of metabolism at rest is determined by the same central and/or peripheral adjustments.

Using an electron spin resonance (ESR) technique, we measured the superoxide radical (•O_2^-) and hydroxyl radical (•OH) scavenging activity from Mallotus repandus (Willd.) Muell.-Arg., Bauhinia championii Benth., Uncaria hirsuta Haviland and Uncaria rhynchophylla Miquel. •O_2^- and •OH were detected as spin adducts of spin traps 5,5-dimethylpyrroline-N-oxide (DMPO). The scavenging potencies of water extracts of crude drugs were evaluated in terms of their ability to reduce the peaks of spin adducts. The extract of B. championii showed the greatest superoxide radical and hydroxyl radical scavenger activity.

In order to clarify the preventive action of Dai-Saiko-to (Da-Chai-Hu-Tang) extract (TJ-8) on the progression of acute liver injury in rats intoxicated with carbon tetrachloride (CCl₄), we examined the effect of post-oral TJ-8 administration on hepatic active oxygen metabolism following the progression of this liver damage. When TJ-8 (1.0 g/kg body weight) was administered orally to male Wistar rats aged five weeks 2 hrs after i.p. injection of CCl₄ (1.0 ml/kg body weight), an apparent liver injury occurred. Significant prevention against the progression of liver injury was found at 24 hrs after injection, judging from the activities of serum transaminases, indexes of liver cell damage. Liver cytosolic superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity decreased 2 and 24 hrs after CCl₄ injection, while liver cytosolic catalase and glutathione reductase (GSSG-R) activities decreased 24 hrs after the injection. At 2 and 24 hrs after CCl₄ treatment, liver cytosolic Se-containing glutathione peroxidase (GSH-px) activity did not change and liver cytosolic glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G-6-PDH) activity increased. Post-oral TJ-8 administration significantly ameliorated decreases in liver SOD, catalase, and GSSG-R activities at 24 hrs after CCl₄ injection, but did not affect liver Se-GSH-px and increased liver G-6-PDH activities at 24 hrs after the injection. Although increased liver lipid peroxide level and decreased liver reduced glutathione and ascorbic acid levels were observed 2 and 24 hrs after CCl₄ injection, post-oral TJ-8 administration significantly prevented these changes found at 24 hrs after injection. These results indicate that post-oral TJ-8 administration can prevent the progression of acute liver injury in CCl₄-injected rats by inhibiting enhanced lipid peroxidation and by improving disrupted active oxygen metabolism in the injured liver.

Solanum alatum aqueous extract was investigated on carrageenin-induced edema and on CCl₄-induced liver injury. The extract (100 or 200 mg/kg body weight) exhibited both anti-inflammatory and hepatoprotective activities. The effects were more prominent at the dose of 200 mg/kg. Histological changes such as necrosis, fatty changes, ballooning degeneration, and inflammatory infiltration of lymphocytes and Kupffer cells around the central veins were concurrently improved by treatment with the S. alatum aqueous extract.

The effects of Ganoderma lucidum (Gl) and Krestin (PSK) extracts on cellular immunocompetence, leukocyte counts and differential count in γ-irradiated mice were investigated in this study. ICR strain male mice were used and randomly divided into five groups. Group A is normal control. Group B, the experimental control, was treated with Gl. Group C, the radiation treatment control, was treated with whole body exposure to 4 Gy γ-irradiation (RT). Group D was treated with RT and Gl. Group E was treated with RT and PSK. The dosage of Gl was 400 mg/day/kg body weight and PSK was 500 mg/day/kg body weight. After irradiation, six mice from each group were sacrificed on day 7 and the other six on day 28. Cellular immunocompetence was measured by means of ³H-thymidine incorporation with splenic cells stimulated through mitogens such as PHA, Con A and LPS. The results revealed that relative splenic weight in Groups D and E were higher than group C on day 28 after γ-irradiation, Group D was the highest in all the experimental groups. Leukocyte counts were decreased significantly in Groups D and E on day 7, the former was a little higher than the latter. Gl administration showed an increase in the leukocyte count in Group D on day 28. The blastogenic response of splenocytes to PHA and Con A in groups D and E were higher than in Group C on days 7 and 28. We suggested that Gl and PSK were effective in enhancing the recovery of cellular immunocompetence from γ-ray irradiation.

To investigate the efficacy of Unsei-in on skin diseases such as Behçet's disease, palmoplantar pustulosis and psoriasis vulgaris, the rheological activity of leukocytes as manifested by adhesiveness, deformability and aggregability was studied in vitro using a micropore filtration method. Unsei-in inhibited the rheological activity of leukocytes at a statistical significance of p < 0.01 in normal individuals whose leukocytes had been stimulated with N-formyl-methionyl-leucyl-phenylalanine (FMLP). It did not, however, inhibit the activity of cells that had not been stimulated by FMLP. In contrast, in Behçet's disease, Unsei-in inhibited rheological activity of non-stimulated leukocytes (p < 0.01) but did not inhibit the rheological activity of FMLP-stimulated leukocytes. In a study using Ouren-gedoku-to and Shimotsu-to, the main constituents of Unsei-in, the latter inhibited the activity of FMLP-stimulated leukocytes in normal individuals (p < 0.02). These results indicate that Unsei-in has an inhibitory effect on rheologically-activated neutrophils, which are involved in the healing mechanisms of the above skin diseases, and it also has a satisfactory effect in the form of a mixture of Shimotsu-to and Ouren-gedoku-to.

Aqueous extracts of plant species from different families produced dose dependent decreases in blood pressure in rat within the first minute (immediate hypotensive response) and in duration of this hypotensive response following i.v. injection, while the subsequent response could be either hypotensive or hypertensive depending on plant species. The subsequent response was not dose-related in both magnitude and duration. The immediate hypotensive response was not due to the vehicle (NaCl solution) nor the common cations present in the extracts. It represented probably a reflex response with chemicals in the plant extracts acting on the peripheral chemoreceptors, or in the pacemaker and/or cardiac tissue, leading to a decrease in heart rate and tension. The subsequent hypotensive/hypertensive response was due to the chemicals acting on targets in different parts of various body systems.
