In this work, multifractal methods have been successfully used to characterize the temporal fluctuations of daily Jiuzhai Valley domestic and foreign tourists before and after Wenchuan earthquake in China. We used multifractal detrending moving average method (MF-DMA). It showed that Jiuzhai Valley tourism markets are characterized by long-term memory and multifractal nature in. Moreover, the major sources of multifractality are studied. Based on the concept of sliding window, the time evolutions of the multifractal behavior of domestic and foreign tourists were analyzed and the influence of Wenchuan earthquake on Jiuzhai Valley tourism system dynamics were evaluated quantitatively. The study indicates that the inherent dynamical mechanism of Jiuzhai Valley tourism system has not been fundamentally changed from long views, although Jiuzhai Valley tourism system was seriously affected by the Wenchuan earthquake. Jiuzhai Valley tourism system has the ability to restore to its previous state in the short term.

Kusuoka and Zhou have defined the Laplacian on the Sierpinski carpet using average values of functions on small cells and the graph structure of cell adjacency. We have implemented an algorithm that uses their method to approximate solutions to boundary value problems. As a result we have a wealth of data concerning harmonic functions with prescribed boundary values, and eigenfunctions of the Laplacian with either Neumann or Dirichlet boundary conditions. We will present some of this data and discuss some ideas for defining normal derivatives on the boundary of the carpet.

The purpose of the present work is to study the fractal behaviour of prime Indian stock exchanges, namely Bombay Stock Exchange Sensitivity Index (BSE Sensex) and National Stock Exchange (NSE). To analyze the monofractality of these indices we have used Higuchi method and Katz method separately. By applying Mutifractal Detrended Fluctuation Analysis (MFDFA) technique we have calculated the generalized Hurst exponents, multifractal scaling exponents and generalized multifractal dimensions for the present indices. We have deduced Hölder exponents as well as singularity spectra for BSE and NSE. It has been observed that both the stock exchanges are possessing self-similarity at different small ranges separately and inhomogeneously. By comparing the multifractal behaviour of the BSE and NSE indices, we have found that the second one exhibits a richer multifractal feature than the first one.

By using fractional differences, one recently proposed an alternative to the formulation of fractional differential calculus, of which the main characteristics is a new fractional Taylor series and its companion Rolle's formula which apply to non-differentiable functions. The key is that now we have at hand a differential increment of fractional order which can be manipulated exactly like in the standard Leibniz differential calculus. Briefly the fractional derivative is the quotient of fractional increments. It has been proposed that this calculus can be used to construct a differential geometry on manifold of fractional order. The present paper, on the one hand, refines the framework, and on the other hand, contributes some new results related to arc length of fractional curves, area on fractional differentiable manifold, covariant fractal derivative, Riemann-Christoffel tensor of fractional order, fractional differential equations of fractional geodesic, strip modeling of fractal space time and its relation with Lorentz transformation. The relation with Nottale's fractal space-time theory then appears in quite a natural way.

We investigated the generation of spherical continuous-tilings of the chaotic attractors or the filled-in Julia sets from the plane mappings. We build three plane mappings, which can be used to construct the continuous patterns on the surfaces of the hexahedron and the unit sphere. We discuss the coordinate transformation for a spatial point between the different coordinate systems and further discuss how to project a spherical point onto a surface of the inscribed hexahedron. We present a method of constructing a spherical pattern with the pattern of a square on the inscribed hexahedron from an arbitrary projective angle, and generate spherical patterns from the three plane mappings. The results show that we can construct a great number of spherical patterns of the chaotic attractors and the filled-in Julia sets from the plane mappings, which are based on the square lattice and meet the requirements of the continuity and the four rotation symmetries on the lattice's boundaries.

The spatial description of flows in porous media is a main issue due to their influence on processes that take place inside. In addition to descriptive statistics, the multifractal analysis based on the Box-Counting fixed-size method has been used during last decade to study some porous media features. However, this method gives emphasis to domain regions containing few data points that spark the biased assessment of generalized fractal dimensions for negative moment orders. This circumstance is relevant when describing the flow velocity field in idealised three-dimensional porous media. The application of the Sandbox method is explored in this work as an alternative to the Box-Counting procedure for analyzing flow velocity magnitude simulated with the lattice model approach for six media with different porosities. According to the results, simulated flows have multiscaling behaviour. The multifractal spectra obtained with the Sandbox method reveal more heterogeneity as well as the presence of some extreme values in the distribution of high flow velocity magnitudes as porosity decreases. This situation is not so evident for the multifractal spectra estimated with the Box-Counting method. As a consequence, the description of the influence of porous media structure on flow velocity distribution provided by the Sandbox method improves the results obtained with the Box-Counting procedure.

Microbioreactors operated in real environments are often subject to noise from the environment. This is commonly manifested as fluctuations in the flow rates of the feed streams. Previous studies with larger bioreactors have shown that noise can seriously impair the performance. Given this possibility, the effects of noise on the performance of a microbioreactor have been analyzed for the trans-esterification of vinyl butyrate by 1-butanol by immobilized lipase B to produce butyl butyrate. As in previous work for macrobioreactors, the analysis was done with (i) no noise, (ii) unfiltered noise, and (iii) noise filtered by four different methods, and the fractal dimension of the product was used as an index of the performance.

All fractal dimensions decreased with increasing dilution rates, and significant stochastic chaos was likely at low dilution rates. Of the four types of filters, the auto-associative neural filter (ANF) was the most effective in reducing chaos and restoring of smooth, nearly noise-free performance. The ANF also does not require a process model, which is a significant advantage for real systems. Simulations also revealed that even in the absence of noise, deterministic chaos is possible at low dilution rates; this underscores the importance of efficient filtering under such conditions when external noise too is present. The results thus establish the importance of noise in microbioreactor behavior and the usefulness of the fractal dimension in characterizing the effects.
