The idea of a rank-one rotating mass matrix (R2M2) is reviewed detailing how it leads to ready explanations both for the fermion mass hierarchy and for the distinctive mixing patterns between up and down fermion states, which can be and have been tested against experiment and shown to be fully consistent with existing data. Further, R2M2 is seen to offer, as by-products: (i) a new solution to the strong CP problem in QCD by linking the theta-angle there to the Kobayashi–Maskawa CP-violating phase in the CKM matrix, and (ii) some novel predictions of possible anomalies in Higgs decay observable in principle at the LHC. A special effort is made to answer some questions raised.

We study universality in the data of the electroproduction of vector mesons, using as guideline the results of a unified nonperturbative approach which reproduces well the available experimental data. After the extraction of factors that are specific of each vector meson, we arrive at a reduced integrated elastic cross-section which is universal. Our analysis suggests a finite infrared behavior for the strong coupling constant.

The top-pions are the three additional typical particles predicted by the topcolor-assisted technicolor (TC2) model and the observation of these particles can be regarded as the direct evidence of the TC2 model. In this paper, we investigate the production of a pair of charged top-pions associated with Z gauge boson at the International Linear Collider (ILC), i.e. and . We calculate the production rate of the process and present the distributions of the transverse momenta of Z gauge boson and charged top-pion . We find that the cross-section of the process can reach 1 fb with reasonable parameter space of the TC2 model. Considering the main decay mode of charged top-pion, we find that such a production may provide copious events. While the cross-section of the process is below 1 fb, hence the process will play an important role in the test of the TC2 model at the ILC when compared with the process .

We reexamine the two-dimensional derivative-coupling model within the operator approach that takes into account the quantum corrections of the fully bosonized Hamiltonian. As a consequence of the fact that there is no true spin-statistics theorem in two dimensions, the operator solution is rewritten in terms of a generalized Mandelstam soliton operator with continuous Lorentz spin (generalized statistics). The particular case corresponding to the Schroer model is considered: the effect of the vector-current-derivative coupling is to give a noncanonical scale dimension for the underlying free Fermi field promoting it to a free Mandelstam operator with generalized statistics.

In this paper we revisit the subject of anomaly cancelation in string theory and M-theory on manifolds with string structure and give three observations. First, that on string manifolds there is no E₈ × E₈ global anomaly in heterotic string theory. Second, that the description of the anomaly in the phase of the M-theory partition function of Diaconescu–Moore–Witten extends from the spin case to the string case. Third, that the cubic refinement law of Diaconescu–Freed–Moore for the phase of the M-theory partition function extends to string manifolds. The analysis relies on extending from invariants which depend on the spin structure to invariants which instead depend on the string structure. Along the way, the one-loop term is refined via the Witten genus.

To illustrate the general results of the previous paper, we discuss here a large concrete example of the orbifold-string theories of permutation-type. For each of the many subexamples, we focus on evaluation of the target space–time dimension, the target space–time signature and the target space–time symmetry of each cycle j in each twisted sector σ. We find in particular a gratifying space–time symmetry enhancement which naturally matches the space–time symmetry of each cycle to its space–time dimension. Although the orbifolds of ℤ₂-permutation-type are naturally Lorentzian, we find that the target space–times associated with larger permutation groups can be Lorentzian, Euclidean and even null , with varying space–time dimensions, signature and symmetry in a single orbifold.

We show that extremal rotating NS5-branes space–times have a hidden conformal symmetry. In this regard, we consider the wave equation of a massless scalar field propagating in extremal NS5-branes space–times and find in the "near region," the wave equation in extremal limit can be written in terms of the SL(2, R) quadratic Casimir.

Moreover, we obtain the microscopic entropy of the extremal NS5-branes space–times, also we calculate the correlation function of a near-region scalar field and find perfect agreement with the dual 2D CFT.

In a D-brane model of cosmology and space–time foam, there are contributions to the dark energy that depend on the D-brane 10-velocities and on the density of D-particle defects in the ten-dimensional bulk. The latter may also reduce the speeds of energetic photons, establishing a phenomenological connection with astrophysical probes of the universality of the velocity of light. Specifically, the cosmological dark energy density measured at the present epoch may be linked to the apparent retardation of energetic photons propagating from nearby AGN's. However, this nascent field of "D-foam phenomenology" may be complicated by variations in the D-particle density encountered at different cosmological epochs. A reduced density of D-particles encountered at redshifts z ~ 1 — a "D-void" — would increase the dark energy while suppressing the vacuum refractive index, and thereby might reconcile the AGN measurements with the relatively small retardation seen for the energetic photons propagating from GRB 090510, as measured by the Fermi satellite.

The quantum spectra of area and entropy of higher-dimensional linear dilaton black holes in various theories via the quasinormal modes method are studied. It is shown that quasinormal modes of these black holes can reveal themselves when a specific condition holds. Finally, we obtain that a higher-dimensional linear dilaton black hole has equidistant area and entropy spectra, and both of them are independent on the space–time dimension.

In this work, we study the nonequilibrium dynamics of ϕ-spinning black rings within the quasilocal formalism. We adopt the counterterm method and compute the renormalized boundary stress–energy tensor. By considering the conservation of this tensor, the condition for removing the conical singularity at spatial infinity is derived. It is subsequently shown that a ϕ-spinning black ring cannot be kept in a state of equilibrium, which is consistent with the physical interpretation that the angular momentum is on the plane orthogonal to the ring and there is no force to balance the tension and gravitational self-attraction. The results of these computations lay a foundation for studying the thermodynamics of ϕ-spinning rings in detail. Finally, we charge up the rings in Einstein–Maxwell-dilaton system and suggest feasible ways to make them balanced.
