For the Casimir interaction between two nearby objects, the plane-wave basis proves convenient for numerical calculations as well as for analytical considerations leading to an optical interpretation of the relevant scattering processes of electromagnetic waves. We review work on the proximity-force approximation (PFA) and corrections to it within the plane-wave basis for systems involving spherical objects. Previous work is extended by allowing for polarization mixing during the reflection at a sphere. In particular, explicit results are presented for perfect electromagnetic conductors. Furthermore, for perfect electric conductors at zero temperature, it is demonstrated that beyond the leading-order correction to the PFA, terms of half-integer order in the distance between the sphere surfaces appear.

We study universal Casimir interactions in two configurations which appear as dual to each other. The first involves spheres described by the Drude model and separated by vacuum while the second involves dielectric spheres immersed in a salted solution at distances larger than the Debye screening length. In both cases, the long-distance limit, equivalently the high-temperature limit, is dominated by the effect of low-frequency transverse magnetic thermal fluctuations. They are independent of the details of dielectric functions of materials, due to the finite conductivity of metals in the former case and of salted water in the latter one. They also show universality properties in their dependence on geometric dimensions in relation to an approximate conformal invariance of the reduced free energy.

The problem of thermal Casimir force, which consists in disagreement of theoretical predictions of the fundamental Lifshitz theory with the measurement data of high precision experiments and some peculiar properties of the Casimir entropy, is reviewed. We discuss different approaches to the resolution of this problem proposed in the literature during the last 20 years. Particular attention is given to the role of the effects of spatial dispersion. The recently suggested nonlocal Drude-like permittivities which take proper account of the dissipation of conduction electrons and bring the predictions of the Lifshitz theory in agreement with experiment and requirements of thermodynamics are considered. The prospects of this approach in the ultimate resolution of the problem of thermal Casimir force are evaluated.

The Casimir effect in graphene systems is reviewed with a emphasis made on the large thermal correction to the Casimir force predicted at short separations between the test bodies. The computational results for the Casimir pressure and for the thermal correction are presented for both pristine graphene and real graphene sheets, which possess nonzero energy gap and chemical potential, obtained by means of exact polarization tensor. Two experiments on measuring the gradient of the Casimir force between an Au-coated sphere and graphene-coated substrates performed by using a modified atomic force microscope cantilever-based technique are described. It is shown that the measurement data of both experiments are in agreement with theoretical predictions of the Lifshitz theory using the polarization tensor. Additionally, several important improvements made in the second experiment, allowed to demonstrate the predicted large thermal effect in the Casimir interaction at short separations. Possible implications of this result to the resolution of long-term problems of Casimir physics are discussed.

The Casimir forces induced by fluctuations of electromagnetic field have been measured with a high precision at distances above $60$ nm. Although at shorter separations the magnitude of the force increases, it is more complicated to measure the forces at distances below $50$ nm. We review the problems that appear in this range of distances and their possible solutions. The first problem is related to the pull-in instability that occurs when two surfaces get too close to each other. As a particular manifestation of this problem, the spontaneous formation of the capillary bridges at distances $\sim 10$ nm is discussed. As an alternative, we discuss the method of adhered cantilever, which does not suffer from the pull-in instability. The second problem is related to the roughness of interacting surfaces that gives a significant deviation of the force from the expected scaling with the distance. We explain how the deviation can be related to the contribution of high asperities to the force. Characterization of the deposited rough films is also covered with a special emphasis on the excessive number of high asperities for the films deposited under nonequilibrium conditions. The third problem is related to the poor precision in the determination of the absolute distance between the bodies that results in a large total error in the force. We discuss the methods to determine the distance upon contact and cover a proposition to improve this precision in the method of adhered cantilever.

The Casimir force acts on nearby surfaces due to zero-point fluctuations of the quantum electromagnetic field. In the nonretarded limit, the interaction is also known as the van der Waals force. When the electromagnetic response of the surfaces is anisotropic, a torque may act on the surfaces. Here, we review the literature and recent developments on the Casimir torque. The theory of the Casimir torque is discussed in an explicit example for uniaxial birefringent plates. Recent theoretical predictions for the Casimir torque in various configurations are presented. A particular emphasis is made on experimental setups for measuring the Casimir torque.

This is a review of recent work on quantum fluctuations of the electric field and of stress tensor operators and their physical effects. The probability distribution for vacuum fluctuations of the electric field is Gaussian, but that for quadratic operators, such as the energy density, can have a more slowly decreasing tail, leading to an enhanced probability of large fluctuations. This effect is very sensitive to the details of how the measurement is performed. Some possible physical effects of these large fluctuations will be discussed.

In the study of quantum vacuum energy and the Casimir effect, it is desirable to model the conductor by a potential of the form $V(z)=z^{\alpha }$. This “soft wall” model was proposed so as to avoid the violation of the principle of virtual work under ultraviolet regularization that occurs for the standard Dirichlet wall. The model was formalized for a massless scalar field, and the expectation value of the stress tensor has been expressed in terms of the reduced Green function of the equation of motion. In the limit of interest, $\alpha \gg 1$, which approximates a Dirichlet wall, a closed-form expression for the reduced Green function cannot be found, so piecewise approximations incorporating the perturbative and WKB expansions of the Green function, along with interpolating splines in the region where neither expansion is valid, have been developed. After reviewing this program, in this paper, we apply the scheme to the wall with $\alpha =6$ and use it to compute the renormalized energy density and pressure inside the cavity for various values of the conformal parameter. The consistency of the results is verified by comparison to their numerical counterparts and verification of the trace anomaly and the conservation law. Finally, we use the approximation scheme to reproduce the energy density inside the quadratic wall, which was previously calculated exactly but with some uncertainty.

We discuss four different, though related, fundamental topics related to the Casimir effect: (1) We suggest that the application of Casimir theory to real dielectric materials, thus implying the atomic spacing as a course-grained length parameter, makes it natural to assume that this parameter is of the same order of magnitude as the QFT time-splitting parameter multiplied with the velocity of light. (2) We show that application of Casimir theory to a thick fluid shell (apparently a closed mechanical system) leads actually to an unstable situation if no extra mechanical forces, typically surface tension forces, are brought into consideration. (3) We analyze how the presence of a radial Casimir repulsive pressure modifies the filling process of a spherical vacuum hole in an infinite fluid (the Reynolds problem), with the result that a bounce occurs at a finite though very small radius. (4) As a comment on an apparently similar situation in general relativity, we consider the gravitational collapse of a singular shell. It might seem natural to allow for the presence of a repulsive Casimir pressure in this case also, thereby obtaining a bounce-like situation again. However, we have to conclude that such a procedure implies an omission of the Casimir field’s gravitational energy, and is therefore hardly tenable, although it is in our opinion worth mentioning.

Dispersion forces between neutral material bodies are due to fluctuations of the polarization of the bodies. For bodies in equilibrium these forces are often referred to as Casimir–Lifshitz forces. For bodies in relative motion, in addition to the Casimir–Lifshitz force, a lateral frictional force (“quantum friction”, in the zero temperature limit) comes into play. The widely accepted theory of the fluctuation-induced forces is based on the “fluctuational electrodynamics”, when the Maxwell equations are supplemented by random current sources responsible for the fluctuations of the medium polarization. The first part of our paper touches on some conceptual issues of the theory, such as the dissipation-less limit and the link between Rytov’s approach and quantum electrodynamics. We point out the problems with the dissipation-less plasma model (with its unphysical double pole at zero frequency) which still appears in the literature. The second part of the paper is devoted to “quantum friction”, in a broad sense, and it contains some novel material. In particular, it is pointed out that in weakly dissipative systems the friction force may not be a stationary process. It is shown, using an “exact” (nonperturbative) quantum treatment, that under appropriate conditions, an instability can occur when the kinetic energy (due to the relative motion between the bodies) is transformed into coherent radiation, exponentially growing in intensity (the instability gets eventually limited by nonlinear effects). We also discuss a setup when the two bodies are at rest but a constant electric current is flowing in one of the bodies. One may say that only the electron component of one body is dragged with respect to the other body, unlike the usual setup when the two bodies are in relative motion. Clearly, there are differences in the frictional forces between the two setups.

Modes have steadily influenced the understanding of physical systems through time. At least since the prediction of the Casimir effect, they also play a very important role in Casimir physics and in the understanding of the different phenomena typical of this research field. At equilibrium modes provide a direct connection between the zero-point energy and the existence of irreducible fluctuations in a quantum system, offering an anatomic view into the physics of the interaction. In nonequilibrium systems, modes can be decisive to understand the behavior of quantum fluctuation-induced phenomena, highlighting key aspects which determine their strength and their functional dependence. In this article we review some recent studies and results that highlight how modes impact Casimir physics and the central role they play in shaping our understanding of this area of research.

In this paper, we will review, through various examples, some ideas connecting the physics of the quantum vacuum and the Casimir effect with the mechanism of symmetry breaking in different backgrounds. In the first example, we will discuss how the quantum vacuum energy is altered by the presence of nonlinearities in the underlying quantum field theory in a way that depends on the spatial dimensionality, as dictated by the Mermin–Wagner–Hohenberg–Coleman theorem. In the second example, we will explore how the combination of boundary effects and (discrete) chiral symmetry breaking can affect the thermodynamical behavior of a system of interacting fermions, and how this is reflected on the Casimir force. Even in the simplest setup of two parallel plates, two interesting things happen: first, the order of the transition through which discrete chiral symmetry may be broken/restored changes from second-order for infinitely large separation to first-order for a finite separation between the boundaries. Second, a peculiar behavior in the fermion condensate occurs, resulting in the appearance of two different phases (massless and massive) in the Casimir force. In the third example, we will also be concerned with the Casimir effect on an interacting fermion background over a string of finite length. Using a self-consistent method, we will show how a nontrivial behavior in the Casimir force arises, displaying a switch from an attractive to a repulsive regime, as a result of the competing effects due to the usual attractive Casimir force and a repulsive component coming from the condensate.

We review recent progress in the computation of leading quantum corrections to the energies of classical solitons with topological structure, including multi-soliton models in one space dimension and string configurations in three space dimensions. Taking advantage of analytic continuation techniques to efficiently organize the calculations, we show how quantum corrections affect the stability of solitons in the Shifman–Voloshin model, stabilize charged electroweak strings coupled to a heavy fermion doublet, and bind Nielsen–Olesen vortices at the classical transition between type I and type II superconductors.

In 1998, astronomers discovered that the expansion of the universe is accelerating. Somehow, something must have made gravity repulsive on cosmological scales. This something was called dark energy; it is described by Einstein’s cosmological constant; and it amounts to about 70% of the total mass of the universe. It has been conjectured that the cosmological constant is a form of vacuum energy, but its prediction from quantum field theory has failed by many orders of magnitude, until recently. Informed by empirical evidence on Casimir forces, Lifshitz theory has not only produced the correct order of magnitude, but is quantitatively consistent with the astronomical data. Moreover, the theory appears to resolve the tension between the measured and the predicted Hubble constant. There is therefore a good chance that Casimir physics explains dark energy. This paper introduces cosmology for practitioners of vacuum forces as part of “The State of the Quantum Vacuum: Casimir Physics in the 2020s” edited by K. A. Milton. It may also be interesting for other physicists and engineers who wish to have a concise introduction to cosmology.
