Based on a two-dimensional Poiseuille and Wormersley flow, accuracy and grid convergence of velocity, shear stress and wall shear stress (WSS) measurements were investigated using the single-relaxation-time (SRT) and multiple-relaxation-time (MRT) lattice Boltzmann models under various open and wall boundary conditions. The results showed that grid convergence of shear stress and WSS are not consistent with that of velocity when flow channels are not aligned to the grids, and strongly rely on the used wall boundary conditions. And the MRT model is slightly superior to the SRT when simulating the complicated border flow. Moreover the WSS should be approximately calculated on the fluid nodes closest to walls under the curved boundary (CB) condition but not for the bounce-back (BB) boundary scheme. As applications, distributions of WSS in a wavy-walled channel and distensible carotid artery were simulated which would much more depend on local roughness of vessel intima than channel diameters.

Unsteady three-dimensional (3D) double diffusive convection in tilted enclosure having a parallelepipedic shape has been analyzed numerically. The governing unsteady, 3D flow, energy and concentration transport equations, have been solved using an accelerated multigrid implicit volume method. Main attention was paid to the effects of the Rayleigh number Ra, buoyancy ratio N and the inclination angle γ of the cavity on the flow structure and heat and mass transfer rates. Typical distributions of velocity contours, temperature and concentration fields in wide range of defining parameters 10³ ≤ Ra ≤ 2 × 10⁴, -5 ≤ N ≤ 5 have been obtained. It is found, that the optimal heat and mass transfer rates for the aiding situation have been observed at two particular inclination angles namely 30° and 75° about the horizontal direction. It should be noted that the flow undergoes a periodic behavior for particular parameters Ra = 10⁴ and γ = 75° according to the aiding flow case. The results also suggest that when N is in range -2 ≤ N ≤ -0.6, the flow continues to be three-dimensional keeping different heat and mass rates. Furthermore, it has been argued that the 2D assumption can be adopted for the 3D flows when the buoyancy ratio N is in range (-0.5–0).

Exceptional points of a class of non-hermitian Hamilton operators Ĥ of the form Ĥ = Ĥ₀ + iĤ₁ are studied, where Ĥ₀ and Ĥ₁ are hermitian operators. Finite dimensional Hilbert spaces are considered. The linear operators Ĥ₀ and Ĥ₁ are given by spin matrices for spin s = 1/2, 1, 3/2, …. Since the linear operators studied are non-normal, properties of such operators are described.

Ranking of agents competing with each other in complex systems may lead to paradoxes according to the pre-chosen different measures. A discussion is presented on such rank–rank, similar or not, correlations based on the case of European countries ranked by UEFA and FIFA from different soccer competitions. The first question to be answered is whether an empirical and simple law is obtained for such (self-) organizations of complex sociological systems with such different measuring schemes. It is found that the power law form is not the best description contrary to many modern expectations. The stretched exponential is much more adequate. Moreover, it is found that the measuring rules lead to some inner structures in both cases.

Nonequilibrium thermal transpiration flow is numerically analyzed by an extended thermodynamic approach, a high-order moment method. The captured velocity profiles of temperature-driven flow in a parallel microchannel and in a micro-chamber are compared with available kinetic data or direct simulation Monte Carlo (DSMC) results. The advantages of the high-order moment method are shown as a combination of more accuracy than the Navier–Stokes–Fourier (NSF) equations and less computation cost than the DSMC method. In addition, the high-order moment method is also employed to simulate the thermal transpiration flow in complex geometries in two types of Knudsen pumps. One is based on micro-mechanized channels, where the effect of different wall temperature distributions on thermal transpiration flow is studied. The other relies on porous structures, where the variation of flow rate with a changing porosity or pore surface area ratio is investigated. These simulations can help to optimize the design of a real Knudsen pump.

We study the evolution of cooperation in public goods games on the square lattice, focusing on the co-player learning mechanism based on the preferential selection that are brought about by wealthy information of groups where participants collect and search for potential imitators from those groups. We find that co-player learning mechanism based on the choice of weighted group can lead to the promotion of public cooperation by means of the information of wealthy groups that is obtained by participants, and after that the partial choice of public goods groups is enhanced with the tunable preferential parameter. Our results highlight that the learning interactions is not solely confined to the restricted connection among players, but co-players of wealthy groups have the opportunity to be as a role model in the promotion of cooperative evolution. Moreover, we also find the size of learning affects the choice of distant players, cooperators (defectors) having more paths to exploit the phalanx of opponents to survive when the value of preferential parameter is small. Besides, the extinction thresholds of cooperators and defectors for different values of noise are also investigated.

There is sufficient evidence to support that the inter-event time distribution of human behaviors is heavy tailed. This fact plays an important role in human dynamics at collective levels. Recently, researchers found that the heavy-tailed inter-activity patterns of human behaviors slow down the spreading significantly. In this paper, we investigate the influence of people's interest time length on information spreading. Considering that information has its own time period of being interested in, we find that for small interest time period, heavy-tailed human behaviors can enhance the information spreading. While for large interest time period, the heavy-tailed human behaviors will suppress the spreading. These results can help us understanding the rule of information spreading, controlling and limiting the outbreak of rumors.

A new algorithm to test percolation conditions for the solution of percolation problems on a lattice and continuum percolation for spaces of an arbitrary dimension has been proposed within the Newman–Ziff algorithm. The algorithm is based on the use of bitwise operators and does not reduce the efficiency of the operation of the Newman–Ziff algorithm as a whole. This algorithm makes it possible to verify the existence of both clusters touching boundaries at an arbitrary point and single-loop clusters continuously connecting the opposite boundaries in a percolating system with periodic boundary conditions. The existence of a cluster touching the boundaries of the system at an arbitrary point for each direction, the formation of a one-loop cluster, and the formation of a cluster with an arbitrary number of loops on a torus can be identified in one calculation by combining the proposed algorithm with the known approaches for the identification of the existence of a percolation cluster. The operation time of the proposed algorithm is linear in the number of objects in the system.

Identifying the node influence in complex networks is an important task to optimally use the network structure and ensure the more efficient spreading in information. In this paper, by taking into account the resource allocation dynamics (RAD) and the k-shell decomposition method, we present an improved method namely RAD to generate the ranking list to evaluate the node influence. First, comparing with the epidemic process results for four real networks, the RAD method could identify the node influence more accurate than the ones generated by the topology-based measures including the degree, k-shell, closeness and the betweenness. Then, a growing scale-free network model with tunable assortative coefficient is introduced to analyze the effect of the assortative coefficient on the accuracy of the RAD method. Finally, the positive correlation is found between the RAD method and the k-shell values which display an exponential form. This work would be helpful for deeply understanding the node influence of a network.

This paper deals with the molecular dynamics simulation (MDS) of nanofluid under Poiseuille flow in a model nanochannel. The nanofluid is created by exerting four solid nanoparticles dispersed in Argon (Ar), as base fluid, between two parallel solid walls. The flow is simulated by molecules with the Lennard-Jones (LJ) intermolecular potential function. Different simulations are done with two different types of solid particles and two cut-off radii. In each case, Copper (Cu) and Platinum (Pt) LJ parameters are applied for the nanoparticles and solid walls particles with cut-off ratios of 2.2σ and 2.5σ. The microstructure of the system at different time steps is investigated to describe the aggregation kinetics of nanofluid on Poiseuille flow. When a few nanoparticles or a cluster of them reach each other, they stick together and the interaction surface of the solid–fluid interface reduces, so the potential energy of the system decreases at these time steps. Therefore, the system enthalpy reduces at the aggregation time steps. Results show that the simulations with cut-off radius 2.5σ indicate minimum clustering effect at the same time. Based on the obtained results, the system with Cu nanoparticles makes it to aggregate later than that of Pt nanoparticles which is due to differences in potential interaction of two materials. The new simulation results enhance our understanding of cluster morphology and aggregation mechanisms.

We study a vehicular traffic scenario on Swiss roads in an emergency situation, calculating how sequentially roads block due to excessive traffic load until global collapse (gridlock) occurs and in this way displays the fragilities of the system. We used a database from Bundesamt für Raumentwicklung which contains length and maximum allowed speed of all roads in Switzerland. The present work could be interesting for government agencies in planning and managing for emergency logistics for a country or a big city. The model used to generate the flux on the Swiss road network was proposed by Mendes et al. [Physica A 391, 362 (2012)]. It is based on the conservation of the number of vehicles and allows for an easy and fast way to follow the formation of traffic jams in large systems. We also analyze the difference between a nonlinear and a linear model and the distribution of fluxes on the Swiss road.

This paper investigates projective lag synchronization (PLS) behavior between chaotic systems in drive-response dynamical networks (DRDNs) model with nonidentical nodes. A hybrid feedback control method is designed to achieve the PLS with and without mismatched terms. Specially, the coupling matrix in this model is not assumed to be symmetric, diffusive or irreducible. The stability of the error dynamics is proven theoretically using the Lyapunov stability theory. Finally, analytical results show that the states of the dynamical network with non-delayed coupling can be asymptotically synchronized onto a desired scaling factor under the designed controller. Moreover, the numerical simulations results demonstrate the validity of the proposed method.
