The discovery in the early 1970s that black holes radiate as black bodies has radically affected our understanding of general relativity, and offered us some early hints about the nature of quantum gravity. In this paper, will review the discovery of black hole thermodynamics and summarize the many independent ways of obtaining the thermodynamic and (perhaps) statistical mechanical properties of black holes. I will then describe some of the remaining puzzles, including the nature of the quantum microstates, the problem of universality, and the information loss paradox.

In this paper, I review some recent, interlinked, work undertaken using cosmological perturbation theory — a powerful technique for modeling inhomogeneities in the universe. The common theme which underpins these pieces of work is the presence of nonadiabatic pressure, or entropy, perturbations. After a brief introduction covering the standard techniques of describing inhomogeneities in both Newtonian and relativistic cosmology, I discuss the generation of vorticity. As in classical fluid mechanics, vorticity is not present in linearized perturbation theory (unless included as an initial condition). Allowing for entropy perturbations, and working to second order in perturbation theory, I show that vorticity is generated, even in the absence of vector perturbations, by purely scalar perturbations, the source term being quadratic in the gradients of first order energy density and isocurvature, or nonadiabatic pressure perturbations. This generalizes Crocco's theorem to a cosmological setting. I then introduce isocurvature perturbations in different models, focusing on the entropy perturbation in standard, concordance cosmology, and in inflationary models involving two scalar fields. As the final topic, I investigate magnetic fields, which are a potential observational consequence of vorticity in the early universe. I briefly review some recent work on including magnetic fields in perturbation theory in a consistent way. I show, using solely analytical techniques, that magnetic fields can be generated by higher order perturbations, albeit too small to provide the entire primordial seed field, in agreement with some numerical studies. I close this paper with a summary and some potential extensions of this work.

The most general solution of the Einstein field equations coupled with a massless scalar field is known as Wyman's solution. This solution is also present in the Brans–Dicke theory and, due to its importance, it has been studied in detail by many authors. However, this solutions has not been studied from the perspective of a possible wormhole. In this paper, we perform a detailed analysis of this issue. It turns out that there is a wormhole. Although we prove that the so-called throat cannot be traversed by human beings, it can be traversed by particles and bodies that can last long enough.

Assuming that the e-folding number is just determined by the change of the scale factor, the tachyonic inflation theory in loop quantum cosmology (LQC) has been discussed. Considering the tachyon field with exponential potential and inverse quadratic potential, we find that the evolutionary pictures of super inflation are affected by the potentials and the initial conditions. However it cannot provide enough e-folding number, no matter which condition is chosen. Therefore a slow-rolling inflation is necessary. The e-folding number for slow-rolling inflation depends on the values of the parameter α of the exponential potential and the initial conditions. To get enough e-folding number, α should be small. Based on the slow-rolling inflation happens immediately when the super inflation ends, and the scale factor continuously grows during the whole inflation stage, we consider an e-folding number provided by the whole inflationary stage, and we find that it is easier to get enough e-folding number when the scale factor increases during all the inflation phase.

In this paper, we consider Einstein gravity in the presence of a class of nonlinear electrodynamics, called power Maxwell invariant (PMI). We take into account (2 + 1)-dimensional spacetime in Einstein-PMI gravity and obtain its black hole solutions. Then, we regard pure F(R) gravity as well as F(R)-conformally invariant Maxwell (CIM) theory to obtain exact solutions of the field equations with black hole interpretation. Finally, we investigate the conserved and thermodynamic quantities and discuss about the first law of thermodynamics for the mentioned gravitational models.

In this paper, we examine the spectrum of a massive scalar particle interacting with the strong gravitational field of a static, spherically symmetric object which is not quite massive enough to be a black hole. As was found in the case of massless particles, there exists a dense spectrum of long lived resonances (meta-stable states), which leads to an energy-averaged cross-section for particle capture which approaches the absorption cross-section for a Schwarzschild black hole. However, the generalization to nonzero mass introduces new phenomena, along with important qualitative changes to the scattering properties. In contrast to the massless case, there exists a spectrum of bound states with almost identical structure to that of the resonances, allowing for the possibility of radiative transitions and particle capture. The resonance lifetimes for elastic processes are parametrically larger than for massless particles, meaning the absorption cross-section approaches the black hole case faster than for massless scalars.

Neutron star models are studied in the context of scalar–tensor theories of gravity in the presence of a conformally coupled scalar field, using two different numerical equations of state (EoS) representing different degrees of stiffness. In both cases we obtain a complete solution by matching the interior numerical solution of the coupled Einstein-scalar field hydrostatic equations, with an exact metric on the surface of the star. These are then used to find the effect of the scalar field and its coupling to geometry, on the neutron star structure, particularly the maximum neutron star mass and radius. We show that in the presence of a conformally coupled scalar field, neutron stars are less dense and have smaller masses and radii than their counterparts in the minimally coupled case, and the effect increases with the magnitude of the scalar field at the center of the star.

In this paper, we provide a gauge-invariant theory of gravitation in the context of Weyl Integrable Spacetimes. After making a brief review of the theory's postulates, we carefully define the observers' proper-time and point out its relation with spacetime description. As a consequence of this relation and the theory's gauge symmetry we recover all predictions of general relativity. This feature is made even clearer by a new exact solution we provide which reveals the importance of a well defined proper-time. The thermodynamical description of the source fields is given and we observe that each of the geometric fields have a certain physical significance, despite the gauge-invariance. This is shown by two examples, where one of them consists of a new cosmological constant solution. Our conclusions highlight the intimate relation among test particles trajectories, proper-time and spacetime description which can also be applied in any other situation, whether or not it recovers general relativity results and also in the absence of a gauge symmetry.

The present work deals with a detailed study of interacting holographic dark energy model for three common choices of the interaction term. Also, two standard choices of IR cut-off, namely, Ricci length scale and radius of the event horizon are considered here. Finally, the cosmographic parameters are presented both analytically and graphically.

The first law of thermodynamics at black hole horizons is known to be obtainable from the gravitational field equations. A recent study claims that the contributions at inner horizons should be considered in order to give the conventional first law of black hole thermodynamics. Following this method, we revisit the thermodynamic aspects of field equations in the Lovelock gravity and f(R) gravity by focusing on two typical classes of charged black holes in the two theories.

In this paper, we study modifications of general relativity, GR, with nonlinear dispersion relations which can be geometrized on tangent Lorentz bundles. Such modified gravity theories, MGTs, can be modeled by gravitational Lagrange density functionals f(R, T, F) with generalized/modified scalar curvature R, trace of matter field tensors T and modified Finsler like generating function F. In particular, there are defined extensions of GR with extra dimensional "velocity/momentum" coordinates. For four-dimensional models, we prove that it is possible to decouple and integrate in very general forms the gravitational fields for f(R, T, F)-modified gravity using nonholonomic 2 + 2 splitting and nonholonomic Finsler like variables F. We study the modified motion and Newtonian limits of massive test particles on nonlinear geodesics approximated with effective extra forces orthogonal to the four-velocity. We compute the constraints on the magnitude of extra-accelerations and analyze perihelion effects and possible cosmological implications of such theories. We also derive the extended Raychaudhuri equation in the framework of a tangent Lorentz bundle. Finally, we speculate on effective modeling of modified theories by generic off-diagonal configurations in Einstein and/or MGTs and Finsler gravity. We provide some examples for modified stationary (black) ellipsoid configurations and locally anisotropic solitonic backgrounds.

Employing linear order perturbation theory with the rotation parameter as the perturbative parameter, we obtain asymptotically AdS slowly rotating black hole solutions in the Einstein gravity with Born–Infeld (BI) type nonlinear electrodynamics (NED). We start from asymptotically AdS static black hole solutions coupled to BI type NED in five dimensions. Then, we consider the effect of adding a small amount of angular momenta to the seed solutions. Finally, we investigate the geometry and thermodynamic properties of the solutions.
