Gravitational wave detection has now entered the era in which signals are being found. It is timely, therefore, to review the current detectors and how they work. This review focuses on the dramatic arc that links the earliest clear understanding of gravitational wave detection with the current generation of detectors. I will also discuss the prospects for expansion of the global network of gravitational wave detectors, with special attention to the role of LIGO-India.

This paper is aimed to study the modeling of spherically symmetric spacetime in the presence of anisotropic dissipative fluid configuration. This is accomplished for an observer moving relative to matter content using two cases of polytropic equation-of-state under conformally flat condition. We formulate the corresponding generalized Tolman–Oppenheimer–Volkoff equation, mass equation, as well as energy conditions for both cases. The conformally flat condition is imposed to find an expression for anisotropy which helps to study spherically symmetric polytropes. Finally, Tolman mass is used to analyze stability of the resulting models.

Interaction/collision of two concentric spherical thin-shells of linear fluid resulting in collapse has been considered recently. We show that addition of finely tuned electric charges on the shells apart from the cosmological constant serves to delay the collapse indefinitely, yielding an ever colliding system of two concentric fluid shells. Given the finely tuned charges, this provides an example of a perpetual two-body motion in general relativity.

This paper is devoted to study the compact objects whose pressure and density are related through polytropic equation-of-state (EoS) and MIT bag model (for quark stars) in the background of $f(R,T)$ gravity. We solve the field equations together with the hydrostatic equilibrium equation numerically for the model $f(R,T)=R+\alpha R^2+\lambda T$ and discuss physical properties of the resulting solution. It is observed that for both types of stars (polytropic and quark stars), the effects of model parameters $\alpha$ and $\lambda$ remain the same. We also obtain that the energy conditions are satisfied and stellar configurations are stable for both EoS.

Carter's constant is a nontrivial conserved quantity of motion of a particle moving in stationary axisymmetric spacetime. In the version of the theorem originally given by Carter, due to the presence of two Killing vectors, the system effectively has two degrees of freedom. We propose an extension to the first version of Carter's theorem to a system having three degrees of freedom to find two functionally independent Carter-like integrals of motion. We further generalize the theorem to a dynamical system with $N$ degrees of freedom. We further study the implications of Carter's constant to superintegrability and present a different approach to probe a superintegrable system. Our formalism gives another viewpoint to a superintegrable system using the simple observation of separable Hamiltonian according to Carter's criteria. We then give some examples by constructing some two-dimensional superintegrable systems based on this idea and also show that all three-dimensional simple classical superintegrable potentials are also Carter separable.

For most initial conditions, cosmologically relevant physical modes were trans-Planckian at the bounce time, often by many magnitude orders. We improve the usual loop quantum cosmology calculation of the primordial power spectra — in the inflationary framework — by accounting for those trans-Planckian effects through modified dispersion relations. This can induce drastic changes in the spectrum, making it either compatible or incompatible with observational data, depending on the details of the choices operated.

From Newtonian potential-density pairs, we construct three-dimensional axisymmetric relativistic sources for a Majumdar–Papapetrou type conformastatic spacetime. As simple examples, we build two families of relativistic thick disks from the first two Miyamoto–Nagai potential-density pairs used in Newtonian gravity to model flat galaxies, and a three-component relativistic model of galaxy (bulge, disk and dark matter halo). We study the equatorial circular motion of test particles around such structures. Also the stability of the orbits is analyzed for radial perturbation using an extension of the Rayleigh criterion. In all examples, the relativistic effects are analyzed and compared with the Newtonian approximation. The models are considered satisfying all the energy conditions.

A promising theory in modifying general relativity (GR) by violating the ordinary energy–momentum conservation law in curved spacetime is the Rastall theory of gravity. In this theory, geometry and matter fields are coupled to each other in a nonminimal way. Here, we study thermodynamic properties of some black hole (BH) solutions in this framework, and compare our results with those of GR. We demonstrate how the presence of these matter sources amplifies the effects caused by the Rastall parameter in thermodynamic quantities. Our investigation also shows that BHs with radius smaller than a certain amount ($\equiv r_0$) have negative heat capacity in the Rastall framework. In fact, it is a lower bound for the possible values of horizon radius satisfied by the stable BHs.

This work is focused on searching a geodesic interpretation of the dynamics of a particle under the effects of a Snyder-like deformation in the background of the Kepler problem. In order to accomplish that task, a Newtonian spacetime is used. Newtonian spacetime is not a metric manifold, but allows to introduce a torsion-free connection in order to interpret the dynamic equations of the deformed Kepler problem as geodesics in a curved spacetime. These geodesics and the curvature terms of the Riemann and Ricci tensors show a mass and a fundamental length dependence as expected, but are velocity-independent that is a feature present in other classical approaches to the problem. In this sense, the effect of introducing a deformed algebra is examined and the corresponding curvature terms calculated, as well as the modifications of the integrals of motion.

The problem of back reaction of the gravitational radiation of the two merging black holes on the metric of the spacetime is investigated. It is shown for some models that large energy density of the gravitational waves close to the merger can lead to the disappearance of the visible accretion disc of the merged pair of black holes.

In this work, we consider the propagation speed of the superenergy flux associated to the Einstein–Rosen cylindrical waves propagating in vacuum and over the background of the gravitational field of an infinitely long mass line distribution. The velocity of the flux is determined considering the reference frame in which the super-Poynting vector vanishes. This reference frame is then considered as comoving with the flux. The explicit expressions for the velocities are given with respect to a reference frame at rest with the symmetry axis.

In the present work, thermodynamics of the new black hole solutions to the four-dimensional Einstein–Maxwell-dilaton gravity theory have been studied. The dilaton potential, as the solution to the scalar field equations, has been constructed out by a linear combination of three Liouville-type potentials. Three new classes of charged dilatonic black hole solutions, as the exact solutions to the coupled equations of gravitational, electromagnetic and scalar fields, have been introduced. The conserved charge and mass of the new black holes have been calculated by utilizing Gauss's electric law and Abbott–Deser mass proposal, respectively. Also, the temperature, entropy and the electric potential of these new classes of charged dilatonic black holes have been calculated, making use of the geometrical approaches. Through a Smarr-type mass formula, the intensive parameters of the black holes have been calculated and validity of the first law of black hole thermodynamics has been confirmed. A thermal stability or phase transition analysis has been performed, making use of the canonical ensemble method. The heat capacity of the new black holes has been calculated and the points of type one- and type two-phase transitions as well as the ranges at which the new charged dilatonic black holes are locally stable have been determined, precisely.

Motivated by the substantial modifications of gravitational theories and by the models that come out of $f(R)$, we apply the field equation of the charged $f(R)=R+\beta R^2$ as well as a general vector potential containing three unknown functions to two spherically symmetric spacetimes. We solve the output of the differential equations and derive a class of black holes that are electrically and magnetically rotating spacetimes. The asymptotic behavior of these black holes acts as anti-de Sitter spacetime. Moreover, these solutions have asymptotic curvature singularities as those of General Relativity. We investigate this by calculating the invariants of curvature. Also, we address the issue of the energy conditions and show that the strong energy condition is satisfied provided $\beta >0$. Finally, we compute the conserved quantities like mass and angular momentum.

It is well known that with an appropriate combination of three Liouville-type dilaton potentials, one can construct charged dilaton black holes in an (anti)-de Sitter [(A)dS] spaces in the presence of linear Maxwell field. However, asymptotically (A)dS dilaton black holes coupled to nonlinear gauge field have not been found. In this paper, we construct, for the first time, three new classes of dilaton black hole solutions in the presence of three types of nonlinear electrodynamics, namely Born–Infeld (BI), Logarithmic (LN) and Exponential nonlinear (EN) electrodynamics. All these solutions are asymptotically (A)dS and in the linear regime reduce to the Einstein–Maxwell-dilaton (EMd) black holes in (A)dS spaces. We investigate physical properties and the causal structure, as well as asymptotic behavior of the obtained solutions, and show that depending on the values of the metric parameters, the singularity can be covered by various horizons. We also calculate conserved and thermodynamic quantities of the obtained solutions. Interestingly enough, we find that the coupling of dilaton field and nonlinear gauge field in the background of (A)dS spaces leads to a strange behavior for the electric field. We observe that the electric field is zero at singularity and increases smoothly until reaches a maximum value, then it decreases smoothly until goes to zero as $r\to \infty$. The maximum value of the electric field increases with increasing the nonlinear parameter $\beta$ or decreasing the dilaton coupling $\alpha$ and is shifted to the singularity in the absence of either dilaton field ($\alpha =0$) or nonlinear gauge field ($\beta \to \infty$).

We consider two noncanonical scalar fields [tachyon and Dirac–Born–Infeld (DBI)] with E-model type of the potential. We study cosmological inflation in these models to find possible $\alpha$-attractors. We show that similar to the canonical scalar field case, in both tachyon and DBI models there is a value of the scalar spectral index in small $\alpha$ limit which is just a function of the e-folds number. However, the value of $n_s$ in DBI model is somewhat different from the other ones. We also compare the results with Planck2015 TT, TE, EE+lowP data. The reheating phase after inflation is studied in these models which gives some more constraints on the model parameters.
