We introduce a set of clustering algorithms whose performance function is such that the algorithms overcome one of the weaknesses of K-means, its sensitivity to initial conditions which leads it to converge to a local optimum rather than the global optimum. We derive online learning algorithms and illustrate their convergence to optimal solutions which K-means fails to find. We then extend the algorithm by underpinning it with a latent space which enables a topology preserving mapping to be found. We show visualisation results on some standard data sets.

Image classification is a challenging problem in organizing a large image database. However, an effective method for such an objective is still under investigation. A method based on wavelet analysis to extract features for image classification is presented in this paper. After an image is decomposed by wavelet, the statistics of its features can be obtained by the distribution of histograms of wavelet coefficients, which are respectively projected onto two orthogonal axes, i.e., x and y directions. Therefore, the nodes of tree representation of images can be represented by the distribution. The high level features are described in low dimensional space including 16 attributes so that the computational complexity is significantly decreased. 2800 images derived from seven categories are used in experiments. Half of the images were used for training neural network and the other images used for testing. The features extracted by wavelet analysis and the conventional features are used in the experiments to prove the efficacy of the proposed method. The classification rate on the training data set with wavelet analysis is up to 91%, and the classification rate on the testing data set reaches 89%. Experimental results show that our proposed approach for image classification is more effective.

This paper considers the robust stability of a class of neural networks with Markovian jumping parameters and time-varying delay. By employing a new Lyapunov–Krasovskii functional, a sufficient condition for the global exponential stability of the delayed Markovian jumping neural networks is established. The proposed condition is also extended to the uncertain cases, which are shown to be the improvement and extension of the existing ones. Finally, the validity of the results are illustrated by an example.

In this paper, we present a neural adaptive control scheme for active vibration suppression of a composite aircraft fin tip. The mathematical model of a composite aircraft fin tip is derived using the finite element approach. The finite element model is updated experimentally to reflect the natural frequencies and mode shapes very accurately. Piezo-electric actuators and sensors are placed at optimal locations such that the vibration suppression is a maximum. Model-reference direct adaptive neural network control scheme is proposed to force the vibration level within the minimum acceptable limit. In this scheme, Gaussian neural network with linear filters is used to approximate the inverse dynamics of the system and the parameters of the neural controller are estimated using Lyapunov based update law. In order to reduce the computational burden, which is critical for real-time applications, the number of hidden neurons is also estimated in the proposed scheme. The global asymptotic stability of the overall system is ensured using the principles of Lyapunov approach. Simulation studies are carried-out using sinusoidal force functions of varying frequency. Experimental results show that the proposed neural adaptive control scheme is capable of providing significant vibration suppression in the multiple bending modes of interest. The performance of the proposed scheme is better than the H_∞ control scheme.

The MMSOM identification method, which had been presented by the authors, is improved to the multiple modeling by the irregular self-organizing map (MMISOM) using the irregular SOM (ISOM). Inputs to the neural networks are parameters of the instantaneous model computed adaptively at every instant. The neural network learns these models. The reference vectors of its output nodes are estimation of the parameters of the local models. At every instant, the model with closest output to the plant output is selected as the model of the plant. ISOM used in this paper is a graph of all the nodes and some of the weighted links between them to make a minimum spanning tree graph. It is shown in this paper that it is possible to add new models if the number of models is initially less than the appropriate one. The MMISOM shows more flexibility to cover the linear model space of the plant when the space is concave.

The problem of the global asymptotic stability for a class of neural networks with time-varying delays is investigated in this paper, where the activation functions are assumed to be neither monotonic, nor differentiable, nor bounded. By constructing suitable Lyapunov functionals and combining with linear matrix inequality (LMI) technique, new global asymptotic stability criteria about different types of time-varying delays are obtained. It is shown that the criteria can provide less conservative result than some existing ones. Numerical examples are given to demonstrate the applicability of the proposed approach.
