In this paper we treat the cancellous bone as is done in mixture theory, i.e. each point in the material has both a fluid and a solid phase co-existing there. Each phase is weighted by the volume fraction of material in the composite structure. It is seen that in such a material attenuation of amplitude as frequency increases occurs as is observed in laboratory experiments^33,34 and as was observed in the finite element homogenization approach used by Hackl, Ilic and Gilbert.

The split-step Fourier method is used in three-dimensional parabolic-equation (PE) models to compute underwater sound propagation in one direction (i.e. forward). The method is implemented in both Cartesian (x, y, z) and cylindrical (r, θ, z) coordinate systems, with forward defined as along x and radial coordinate r, respectively. The Cartesian model has uniform resolution throughout the domain, and has errors that increase with azimuthal angle from the x axis. The cylindrical model has consistent validity in each azimuthal direction, but a fixed cylindrical grid of radials cannot produce uniform resolution. Two different methods to achieve more uniform resolution in the cylindrical PE model are presented. One of the methods is to increase the grid points in azimuth, as a function of r, according to nonaliased sampling theory. The other is to make use of a fixed arc-length grid. In addition, a point-source starter is derived for the three-dimensional Cartesian PE model. Results from idealized seamount and slope calculations are shown to compare and verify the performance of the three methods.

A high-order interior penalty discontinuous Galerkin method for the compressible Navier–Stokes equations is introduced, which is a modification of the scheme given by Hartmann and Houston. In this paper we investigate the influence of penalization and boundary treatment on accuracy. By observing eigenvalues and condition numbers, a lower bound for the penalization term μ was found, whereas convergence studies depict reasonable upper bounds and a linear dependence on the critical time step size. By investigating conservation properties we demonstrate that different boundary treatments influence the accuracy by several orders of magnitude, and propose reasonable strategies to improve conservation properties.

The boundary element–Rayleigh integral method (BERIM) is developed for the solution of acoustic problems consisting of a cavity with a single opening. The method is a hybrid of the interior boundary element method (BEM) and the Rayleigh integral method for the solution of the Helmholtz equation. FORTRAN codes for expressing the method for axisymmetric problems and general three-dimensional problems are developed. Both methods are applied to the problem of simulating the acoustic field produced by horn loudspeakers. The results are compared with measured data and the traditional exterior BEM. It is shown that the method can have significant computational advantages over the traditional BEM for problems consisting of an open cavity.

The coupled free vibration analysis of the thin-walled laminated composite I-beams with bisymmetric and monosymmetric cross sections considering shear effects is developed. The laminated composite beam takes into account the transverse shear and the restrained warping induced shear deformation based on the first-order shear deformation beam theory. The analytical technique is used to derive the constitutive equations and the equations of motion of the beam in a systematic manner considering all deformations and their mutual couplings. The explicit expressions for displacement parameters are presented by applying the power series expansions of displacement components to simultaneous ordinary differential equations. Finally, the dynamic stiffness matrix is determined using the force–displacement relationships. In addition, for comparison, a finite beam element with two-nodes and fourteen-degrees-of-freedom is presented to solve the equations of motion. The performance of the dynamic stiffness matrix developed by study is tested through the solutions of numerical examples and the obtained results are compared with results available in literature and the detailed three-dimensional analysis results using the shell elements of ABAQUS. The vibrational behavior and the effect of shear deformation are investigated with respect to the modulus ratios and the fiber angle change.

2.5D and 3D Green's functions are implemented to simulate wave propagation in the vicinity of two-dimensional wedges. All Green's functions are defined by the image-source technique, which does not account directly for the acoustic penetration of the wedge surfaces. The performance of these Green's functions is compared with solutions based on a normal mode model, which are found not to converge easily for receivers whose distance to the apex is similar to the distance from the source to the apex. The applicability of the image source Green's functions is then demonstrated by means of computational examples for three-dimensional wave propagation. For this purpose, a boundary element formulation in the frequency domain is developed to simulate the wave field produced by a 3D point pressure source inside a two-dimensional fluid channel. The propagating domain may couple different dipping wedges and flat horizontal layers. The full discretization of the boundary surfaces of the channel is avoided since 2.5D Green's functions are used. The BEM is used to couple the different subdomains, discretizing only the vertical interfaces between them.
