This paper outlines a method for evaluating environmental assessment (EA) systems called the environmental assessment system evaluation method. The method consists of five steps: (1) develop an initial list of good practices based on a literature review; (2) validate and adjust the practices by surveying experts and stakeholders; (3) describe the EA system; (4) use the good practices to evaluate the EA system through surveying EA participants and reviewing relevant documentation; and (5) identify changes to address deficiencies. The method provides a comprehensive and transparent evaluation that identifies strengths and weaknesses and means of improvement. The evaluation method is tested by applying it in a case study evaluation of the EA system for bitumen development in Canada.

The environmental policy and Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) are two notions of high importance for enterprises and nations. Numerous pages have been written about the environmental policy of companies in their CSR reports. Whether it concerns to raise environmental awareness among their employees or local communities or to give in detail their environmental footprint at the end of the story, it is about giving proofs of their environmental policy. Climate change is among the topics of CSR reports and is under examination in this paper. A case study analysis will be applied in order to present how climate change is interpreted in the CSR reports of Greek companies from the petroleum refining industry.

In India industrial pollution is regulated at two levels: the centre and the state. This two tier regulatory structure results in a difference in the efficacy of environmental regulation among the Indian states. Literature exploring the policy debate around the inter-state efficacy of the environmental regulation in India, however, is sparse. This paper utilises principal component analysis to construct an environmental regulatory efficacy index to show an inter-state disparity in the efficacy of environmental regulation in India. It develops an environmental regulatory policy model to categorise the existing Indian regulatory strategies to control industrial pollution. Findings of the environmental regulatory efficacy index are matched with the environmental regulatory policy model to show that a proactive regulatory strategy improves the efficacy of environmental regulation. Policy discussion recommends the need to integrate the environmental policy with the economic policy and suggests diligent utilisation of funds to improve the efficacy of environmental regulation.

The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Brownfields Program provides grants to assess and clean up brownfields. There are few studies that estimate tax revenue impacts from cleanup beyond those generated directly from within the remediated site’s property lines. This study estimates the increased residential property tax revenue attributable to brownfields cleanup at 48 sites remediated between 2004 and 2011 under the EPA Brownfields Cleanup Grants Program. Findings from a previous study of a 5% to 15.2% property value increase following cleanup at these sites are applied to the assessed values of nearby residential properties along with local tax laws, assessment ratios, and rates to estimate tax revenue gained as a result of brownfields cleanup. The estimated increase in residential property tax revenue for a single tax year from remediating 48 brownfields properties was between $29 million and $97 million (2014 USD).

Owing to the rise of societal awareness and hence governmental quest for environmental conservation worldwide, environmental friendliness in products has become a critical design consideration for all manufacturers during new product development. Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) is a comprehensive method to quantitatively assess the environmental burdens of products or services. However, such studies are difficult to carry out at the early product development process because of uncertain or limited product information. Also, LCA is a time and resource-consuming methodology. This paper proposes a shortcut approach to support product designers to carry out the environmental impact evaluations especially in the initial product development stage. This paper discusses the key challenges of implementing environmental impact evaluation in new product development. The combined Evidential Reasoning (ER) and Fuzzy Set Theory (FST) approach is applied to handle the uncertain information of the environmental data and deficiency of LCA. The result demonstrates the superiority of the combined ER and FST for evaluating several design alternatives while the uncertain information has been considered.
