A marked graph diagram is a link diagram possibly with marked 4-valent vertices. S. J. Lomonaco, Jr. and K. Yoshikawa introduced a method of representing surface-links by marked graph diagrams. Specially, K. Yoshikawa suggested local moves on marked graph diagrams, nowadays called Yoshikawa moves. It is now known that two marked graph diagrams representing equivalent surface-links are related by a finite sequence of these Yoshikawa moves. In this paper, we provide some generating sets of Yoshikawa moves on marked graph diagrams representing unoriented surface-links, and also oriented surface-links. We also discuss independence of certain Yoshikawa moves from the other moves.

In this work we present a direct connection between Garside normal forms in the braid group B₃ and their associated matrices in SL₂(ℕ) coming from the Nielsen–Thurston theory. As a consequence, we can give an upper and a lower bound for the dilatation factor of a rigid pseudo-Anosov three-strands braid with canonical length ℓ.

We introduce a new class of links for which we give a lower bound for the slice genus g_*, using the generalized Rasmussen invariant. We show that this bound, in some cases, allows one to compute g_* exactly; in particular, we compute g_* for torus links. We also study another link invariant: the strong slice genus . Studying the behavior of a specific type of cobordisms in Lee homology, a lower bound for is also given.

A chord diagram consists of a circle, called the backbone, with line segments, called chords, whose endpoints are attached to distinct points on the circle. The genus of a chord diagram is the genus of the orientable surface obtained by thickening the backbone to an annulus and attaching bands to the inner boundary circle at the ends of each chord. Variations of this construction are considered here, where bands are possibly attached to the outer boundary circle of the annulus. The genus range of a chord diagram is the genus values over all such variations of surfaces thus obtained from a given chord diagram. Genus ranges of chord diagrams for a fixed number of chords are studied. Integer intervals that can be, and those that cannot be, realized as genus ranges are investigated. Computer calculations are presented, and play a key role in discovering and proving the properties of genus ranges.

Using Chebyshev polynomials, C. Frohman and R. Gelca introduced a basis of the Kauffman bracket skein module of the torus. This basis is especially useful because the Jones–Kauffman product can be described via a very simple Product-to-Sum formula. Presented in this work is a diagrammatic proof of this formula, which emphasizes and demystifies the role played by Chebyshev polynomials.

We refine Matveev's result asserting that any two closed oriented 3-manifolds can be related by a sequence of borromean surgeries if and only if they have isomorphic first homology groups and linking pairings. Indeed, a borromean surgery induces a canonical isomorphism between the first homology groups of the involved 3-manifolds, which preserves the linking pairing. We prove that any such isomorphism is induced by a sequence of borromean surgeries. As an intermediate result, we prove that a given algebraic square finite presentation of the first homology group of a 3-manifold, which encodes the linking pairing, can always be obtained from a surgery presentation of the manifold.

We describe a correspondence between Turaev surfaces of link diagrams on S² ⊂ S³ and special Heegaard diagrams for S³ adapted to links.
