A review study of the developments in the field of pulsed laser-solid interaction simulation methods, for moderate laser energies, is presented. The paper is focused on the methods that numerically simulate the interactions of pulsed ns-laser with solid metal targets. Three main regimes for pulsed laser excitation, are well established, namely, the thermoelastic, melting and plasma regimes. The modelling and simulation techniques that may numerically describe these three regimes and the occurring dynamic matter responses are reviewed. Modelling efforts concerning various fields of applications of lasers are briefly discussed.

Mechanical characteristics of soft biological tissues mostly depend on their hierarchy at different scales from nano- to macro-structure. It is shown that arterial wall tissue is highly sensitive to its mechanical environment and any alteration in mechanical factors such as blood pressure, triggers physio- pathological processes within arterial wall. Quantification of these mechanical properties will provide us with deeper insights of ongoing biological events. In this context, mechanical contributions of wall constituents in health and diseases are of growing interest. Hence, this review is concerned with mechanical models of arterial wall tissue with a focus on microstructurally motivated representations.

Our prior studies of polymer composites subjected to stress have shown that a statistical distribution of acoustic emission damage events occur in multiscale and include several damage modes. Various multiscale modeling and simulation methods have been developed by others to obtain constitutive equations, which were used to link the variables between microscopic and macroscopic scales of continuum. Very limited experimental work exists to reveal physical evidence on the multiscale damage modes, and their relationship and consequential influence on performance of materials. This paper reports an innovative approach that experimentally evidences the response of damage events in different scales to the applied stress. It shows that a strong correlation exists between multiscale damage modes, and that ensemble-normalized entropy and physical evidence can be qualitatively and quantitatively used to integrate related damage modes at different scales.

In this work, an early proposed atomistic-based multiscale process zone model is revised and employed to simulate crack propagation and spall fracture in polycrystalline solids. The multiscale process zone model is capable of describing heterogenous materials by incorporating the effect of inhomogeneities such as grain boundaries, slip lines and inclusions. A consistent depletion potential resulting from fundamental principles in colloidal physics is used to describe the cohesive laws for both the grain interfaces and process zones in bulk materials, which provides microstructure-based interface potentials in both normal and tangential directions with respect to finite element boundary separations in contrast to conventional cohesive methods. The polycrystalline microstructure are generated by using the Voronoi tessellations. Two different approaches of treating the process zone are proposed. The multiscale process zone model is implemented in a Lagrange framework based on the Galerkin weak form formulation. In addition, to eliminate the zero-energy modes and avoid shear locking in the interphase elements, a reduced integration technique is adopted in simulations. Numerical simulations on crack propagation in materials with various cohesive strengths have been carried out, and they can describe both inter-granular and trans-granular fractures. Finally, the spall-fracture of a specimen under high-impact load is captured using the proposed multiscale process zone model.
