The propagation of chaos property for a system of interacting particles, describing the spatial evolution of a network of interacting filaments is studied. The creation of a network of mycelium is analyzed as representative case, and the generality of the modeling choices are discussed. Convergence of the empirical density for the particle system to its mean-field limit is proved, and a result of regularity for the solution is presented.

In this paper, we introduce the problem of parameter identification for a coupled nonlocal Cahn–Hilliard-reaction-diffusion PDE system stemming from a recently introduced tumor growth model. The inverse problem of identifying relevant parameters is studied here by relying on techniques from optimal control theory of PDE systems. The parameters to be identified play the role of controls, and a suitable cost functional of tracking-type is introduced to account for the discrepancy between some a priori knowledge of the parameters and the controls themselves. The analysis is carried out for several classes of models, each one depending on a specific relaxation (of parabolic or viscous type) performed on the original system. First-order necessary optimality conditions are obtained on the fully relaxed system, in both the two- and three-dimensional cases. Then, the optimal control problem on the non-relaxed models is tackled by means of asymptotic arguments, by showing convergence of the respective adjoint systems and the minimization problems as each one of the relaxing coefficients vanishes. This allows obtaining the desired necessary optimality conditions, hence to solve the parameter identification problem, for the original PDE system in case of physically relevant double-well potentials.

In this paper, we introduce a new stabilization for discontinuous Galerkin methods for the Poisson problem on polygonal meshes, which induces optimal convergence rates in the polynomial approximation degree $p$. The stabilization is obtained by penalizing, in each mesh element $K$, a residual in the norm of the dual of $H^1(K)$. This negative norm is algebraically realized via the introduction of new auxiliary spaces. We carry out a $p$-explicit stability and error analysis, proving $p$-robustness of the overall method. The theoretical findings are demonstrated in a series of numerical experiments.

This paper aims at an accurate and efficient computation of effective quantities, e.g. the homogenized coefficients for approximating the solutions to partial differential equations with oscillatory coefficients. Typical multiscale methods are based on a micro–macro-coupling, where the macromodel describes the coarse scale behavior, and the micromodel is solved only locally to upscale the effective quantities, which are missing in the macromodel. The fact that the microproblems are solved over small domains within the entire macroscopic domain, implies imposing artificial boundary conditions on the boundary of the microscopic domains. A naive treatment of these artificial boundary conditions leads to a first-order error in $𝜀/\delta$, where $𝜀<\delta$ represents the characteristic length of the small scale oscillations and ${\delta }^d$ is the size of microdomain. This error dominates all other errors originating from the discretization of the macro and the microproblems, and its reduction is a main issue in today’s engineering multiscale computations. The objective of this work is to analyze a parabolic approach, first announced in A. Abdulle, D. Arjmand, E. Paganoni, C. R. Acad. Sci. Paris, Ser. I, 2019, for computing the homogenized coefficients with arbitrarily high convergence rates in $𝜀/\delta$. The analysis covers the setting of periodic microstructure, and numerical simulations are provided to verify the theoretical findings for more general settings, e.g. non-periodic microstructures.

This paper concerns the structural stability of smooth cylindrically symmetric transonic flows in a concentric cylinder. Both cylindrical and axi-symmetric perturbations are considered. The governing system here is of mixed elliptic–hyperbolic and changes type and the suitable formulation of boundary conditions at the boundaries is of great importance. First, we establish the existence and uniqueness of smooth cylindrical transonic spiral solutions with nonzero angular velocity and vorticity which are close to the background transonic flow with small perturbations of the Bernoulli’s function and the entropy at the outer cylinder and the flow angles at both the inner and outer cylinders independent of the symmetric axis, and it is shown that in this case, the sonic points of the flow are nonexceptional and noncharacteristically degenerate, and form a cylindrical surface. Second, we also prove the existence and uniqueness of axi-symmetric smooth transonic rotational flows which are adjacent to the background transonic flow, whose sonic points form an axi-symmetric surface. The key elements in our analysis are to utilize the deformation-curl decomposition for the steady Euler system to deal with the hyperbolicity in subsonic regions and to find an appropriate multiplier for the linearized second-order mixed type equations which are crucial to identify the suitable boundary conditions and to yield the important basic energy estimates.
