The linear programming (LP) bound of Delsarte can be applied to several problems in various branches of mathematics. We describe a general Fourier analytic method to get a slight improvement on this bound. We then apply our method to the problem of mutually unbiased bases (MUBs) to prove that the Fourier family F(a; b) in dimension 6 cannot be extended to a full system of MUBs.

In this paper, we examine whether a quantum computer can efficiently simulate time evolution of the Dirac particle. We consider a Gaussian wave packet scattered by a step potential. We compare the results obtained from a quantum algorithm with the results of classical simulations (Cayley's method) and analytical calculations.

In this paper we define some new generalized measures of ‘useful’ relative information and study their particular cases. We also obtain their relations with common entropy measures. Moreover, we define the quantum generalized Tsallis entropy and show that projective measurement does not decrease the quantum generalized Tsallis entropy of a quantum state. Finally, we define generalized quantum Tsallis and Renyi relative entropies and discuss their particular cases.

For the quantum stochastic processes generated by the Boolean commutation relations, we prove the following version of De Finetti Theorem: each of such Boolean processes is exchangeable if and only if it is independent and identically distributed with respect to the tail algebra.

We formulate some properties of a set of several mutually unbiased measurements. These properties are used for deriving entropic uncertainty relations. Applications of mutually unbiased measurements in entanglement detection are also revisited. First, we estimate from above the sum of the indices of coincidence for several mutually unbiased measurements. Further, we derive entropic uncertainty relations in terms of the Rényi and Tsallis entropies. Both the state-dependent and state-independent formulations are obtained. Using the two sets of local mutually unbiased measurements, a method of entanglement detection in bipartite finite-dimensional systems may be realized. A certain trade-off between a sensitivity of the scheme and its experimental complexity is discussed.

We study many-party correlations quantified in terms of the Umegaki relative entropy (divergence) from a Gibbs family known as a hierarchical model. We derive these quantities from the maximum-entropy principle which was used earlier to define the closely related irreducible correlation. We point out the differences between quantum states and probability vectors which exist in hierarchical models, in the divergence from a hierarchical model and in local maximizers of this divergence. The differences are, respectively, missing factorization, discontinuity and reduction of uncertainty. We discuss global maximizers of the mutual information of separable qubit states.

Nonequilibrium thermodynamic state variables are derived for a stochastic limit-cycle oscillator model that has been used in motor control research to describe human rhythmic limb movements. The nonequilibrium thermodynamic state variables are regarded as counterparts to the thermodynamic state variables entropy, internal energy, and free energy of equilibrium systems. The derivation of the state variables is based on maximum entropy distributions of the Hamiltonian energy of the stochastic limit-cycle oscillators. The limit-cycle oscillator model belongs to the class of canonical-dissipative systems, on the one hand, and, on the other hand, can be cast into the form of an augmented Langevin equation. Both concepts are known as physical models for open systems. Experimental data from paced and self-paced pendulum swinging experiments are presented and estimates for the nonequilibrium thermodynamic state variables are given. Entropy and internal energy increased with increasing oscillation frequency both for the paced and self-paced conditions. Interestingly, the nonequilibrium free energy decayed when oscillation frequency was increased, which is akin to the decay of the Landau free energy when the control parameter is scaled further away from its critical value.
