In the present paper we show a link between bistochastic quantum channels and classical maps. The primary goal of this work is to analyse the multiplicative structure of the Birkhoff polytope of order 3 (the simplest nontrivial case). A suitable complex parametrization of the Birkhoff polytope is proposed, which reveals several its symmetries and characteristics, in particular: (i) the structure of Markov semigroups inside the Birkhoff polytope, (ii) the relation between the set of Markov time evolutions, the set of positive definite matrices and the set of divisible matrices. A condition for Markov time evolution of semigroups in the set of symmetric bistochastic matrices is derived, which leads to an universal conserved quantity for all Markov evolutions. Finally, the complex parametrization is extended to the Birkhoff polytope of order 4.

One of the differences between classical and quantum world is that in the former we can always perform a measurement that gives certain outcomes for all pure states, while such a situation is not possible in the latter one. The degree of randomness of the distribution of the measurement outcomes can be quantified by the Shannon entropy. While it is well known that this entropy, as a function of quantum states, needs to be minimized by some pure states, we would like to address the question how ‘badly’ can we end by choosing initially any pure state, i.e., which pure states produce the maximal amount of uncertainty under given measurement. We find these maximizers for all highly symmetric POVMs in dimension 2, and for all SIC-POVMs in any dimension.

A parametrized family of normal states on a von Neumann algebra is called a statistical experiment, which generalizes the corresponding concepts in classical statistics and finite-dimensional quantum systems. We introduce randomization preorder and equivalence relations for statistical experiments with a fixed parameter set and for normal channels with a fixed input space by post-processing completely positive channels. In this paper, we prove that the set of equivalence classes of statistical experiments or those of normal channels is an upper and lower directed-complete partially ordered set with respect to the randomization order, i.e. any increasing or decreasing net of statistical experiments or channels has its supremum or infimum in the randomization order. We also show that if the outcome space of each statistical experiment or channel of a randomization-monotone net is commutative, the outcome space of the supremum or infimum can also be taken to be commutative. We consider two examples of homogeneous Markov processes of channels on infinite-dimensional separable Hilbert spaces, namely block-diagonalization with irrational translation and ideal quantum linear amplifier channels, and explicitly derive their infima. Throughout the paper, the concept of channel conjugation is used to obtain results for decreasing channels from those for increasing channels.

The entanglement dynamics in a bipartite system consisting of a qubit and a harmonic oscillator interacting only through their coupling with the same bath is studied. The considered model assumes that the qubit is coupled to the bath via the Jaynes-Cummings interaction, whilst the position of the oscillator is coupled to the position of the bath via a dipole interaction. We give a microscopic derivation of the Gorini–Kossakowski–Sudarshan–Lindblad equation for the considered model. Based on the Kossakowski matrix, we show that non-classical correlations including entanglement can be generated by the considered dynamics. We then analytically identify specific initial states for which entanglement is generated. This result is also supported by our numerical simulations.

We study the fundamental properties of classical and quantum Markov processes generated by q-Bessel operators and their extension to the algebra of all bounded operators on the Hilbert space $L_{q,\alpha }^2$. In particular, we find a suitable generalized Gorini–Kossakowski–Sudarshan–Lindblad representation for the infinitesimal generator of q-Bessel operator and show that both the classical and quantum Markov processes are transient for α > 0 and recurrent for α = 0. We also show that they do not admit invariant states and, moreover that the support projection of any initial state instantaneously fills the full space.
