In this paper, we review the contribution of the Rashba spin–orbit coupling to the magnetoconduction of a two-dimensional electron system (2DES) confined in an inversion layer under quantum Hall regime (low temperature and low defects and impurities). The study is based on a semi-classical model for the magnetoconductivities of the 2DES. This model reproduces the measurements of the Shubnikov-de Haas (SdH) oscillations obtained in systems confined in III–V heterostructures, and also the quantum Hall magnetoconductivity (magnetoresistivity). We also discuss the Rashba and Zeeman competition and its effect on the magnetoconductivity.

Effects of spin–orbit coupling (SOC) on magnetocrystalline anisotropy, magneto-optical Kerr effect (MOKE), magnetic damping parameter and anomalous Hall effect (AHE) have been studied in theory extensively. In contrast, few experimental reports have appeared on these issues. In this review paper, we introduce our recent experimental investigation on the SOC tuning effects on the perpendicular magnetic anisotropy, polar MOKE, intrinsic magnetic damping parameter and AHE in L1₀ ordered ${\mathrm{Fe}}_{0.5}{\left({\mathrm{Pd}}_{1-x}{\mathrm{Pt}}_x\right)}_{0.5}$ ternary alloys. We also outline the SOC effects in polycrystalline disordered ${\mathrm{Fe}}_{0.5}{\left({\mathrm{Pd}}_{1-x}{\mathrm{Pt}}_x\right)}_{0.5}$ films for comparison.

Spin Hall effects (SHEs) interconvert spin- and charge currents due to spin–orbit interaction, which enables convenient electrical generation and detection of diffusive spin currents and even collective spin excitations in magnetic solids. Here, we review recent experimental efforts exploring efficient spin Hall detector materials as well as new approaches to drive collective magnetization dynamics and to manipulate spin textures by SHEs. These studies are also expected to impact practical spintronics applications beyond their significance in fundamental research.

Controlling magnetic order on ultrashort timescales is crucial for engineering the next-generation magnetic devices that combine ultrafast data processing with ultrahigh-density data storage. An appealing scenario in this context is the use of femtosecond (fs) laser pulses as an ultrafast, external stimulus to fully set the orientation and the magnetization magnitude of a spin ensemble. Achieving such control on ultrashort timescales, e.g., comparable to the excitation event itself, remains however a challenge due to the lack of understanding the dynamical behavior of the key parameters governing magnetism: The elemental magnetic moments and the exchange interaction. Here, we investigate the fs laser-induced spin dynamics in a variety of multi-component alloys and reveal a dissimilar dynamics of the constituent magnetic moments on ultrashort timescales. Moreover, we show that such distinct dynamics is a general phenomenon that can be exploited to engineer new magnetic media with tailor-made, optimized dynamic properties. Using phenomenological considerations, atomistic modeling and time-resolved X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD), we demonstrate demagnetization of the constituent sub-lattices on significantly different timescales that depend on their magnetic moments and the sign of the exchange interaction. These results can be used as a “recipe” for manipulation and control of magnetization dynamics in a large class of magnetic materials.

The nucleation fields of magnetization reversal is calculated here for an infinite, hollow nanotube formed by two ferromagnetic walls. The two tubes can reverse either by curling or by rotation in unison, and have thus four separate reversal modes. The properties of the reversal fields are summarized by means of a series of phase diagrams which display the dependence of the reversal mode on the inner and outer radius of the nanotube. Under certain conditions a large range of nucleation fields my be achieved by a small variation of the nanotube radius.
