Use of Patented Traditional Chinese Medicine against COVID-19

Since December 2019, multiple cases of a novel coronavirus pneumonia had been reported in Wuhan City, Hubei Province of China. As the pandemic spread to other areas, such cases were also found in other regions in China as well as countries all over the world. It has been confirmed to be an acute respiratory epidemic disease caused by the infection of a novel coronavirus.

On March 3, 2020, the General offices of the National Health Commission and State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine jointly issued the notice of publishing New Coronavirus Pneumonia Diagnosis and Treatment Program (Trial Version 7). In the notice, all relevant medical institutions are required to use TCM proactively and strengthen the combination of TCM and Western Medicine (WM). The TCM–WM joint consultation mechanism should be in place to ensure favorable clinical outcomes in the treatment of COVID-19 patients.

The World Health Organization (WHO) defines rational use of medicines if patients receive medications appropriate for their clinical needs, in doses that meet their own individual requirements, for an adequate period of time, and at the lowest cost to them and their community. In summary, the core components of rational use of medicines include safety, efficacy, economics, and appropriateness. The rational use of Chinese patent medicine also needs to conform to these core components. On top of that, the use of Chinese patent medicine is under the guidance of TCM theory. The essence of treatment based on pattern identification should be inherited to master the guiding principle of clinical use, ADRs/ADEs, precautions, and combination rules to ensure the safe and rational use of Chinese patent medicine.

The Diagnosis and Treatment Protocol for Novel Coronavirus Pneumonia (Trial Version 7), issued by the National Health Commission and State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine, recommends the use of following Chinese Patent Medicines during the medical observation period: Huoxiang Zhengqi Capsule (pill, water, oral liquid), Jinhua Qinggan Granule, Lianhua Qingwen Capsule (granule), and Shufeng Jiedu Capsule.

The Diagnosis and Treatment Protocol for Novel Coronavirus Pneumonia (Trial Version 7) issued by the National Health Commission and National Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine recommend the use of eight Chinese Patent Medicines [Xiyanping Injection, Tanreqing Injection, Xuebijing Injection, Xingnaojing Injection, Reduning Injection, Shengmai Injection, Shenfu Injection, and Shenmai Injection] for the treatment of severe and critical cases in the clinical treatment period.
