The Japanese word, Ikigai means 'reason for being'. Think of what you love, what you are good at, what you can be paid for, and what the world needs. When these come together, you get your Ikigai. However, Ikigai can be beyond these four components and doesn't have to include any or all of them. The moments each day where you live fully — engaging in a hobby or pursuit, learning, connecting with people, being useful, choosing empathy over apathy, and being in the present — and the small joys that inhabit those moments make your Ikigai. You can have more than one Ikigai and it can change with time. You already have your Ikigai and just need to discover it!
The book unveils the life journeys of 25 teens that left India for the uncharted waters of Singapore in the 1990s and early 2000s. Each story started with engineering and took the person to one's calling — dance, filmmaking, entrepreneurship, mountaineering, philanthropy, research, and even monkhood. Did they find their Ikigai? Uncover the pages to find out!

"Many people go in search of guidance for professional or personal growth from motivational speakers, spiritual leaders, and Gurus, and may or may not find what they seek. Sometimes, in our delusion and entitlement, we do not see the real-life heroes around us. You Know the Glory, Not the Story: 25 Journeys towards Ikigai unfolds the true stories of individuals and how they find the key to their success in professional life. A work of marvel, the stories help dig into their personality, conscience, and ethics through their challenges and journey towards Ikigai. It is a much-needed work for the 21st century, where many taste success and reach saturation early."
Unnath Jain
Bharatanatyam Dancer and Teacher, Hassan
"You Know the Glory, Not the Story: 25 Journeys towards Ikigai offers a rare and richly-rewarding read. Take a deep dive into the diverse lives profiled in this very readable book and it is as if you have made many new friends. The casual tone belies the profound lessons embedded in each story — whether the school topper who becomes a mortgage bank whiz kid and then transforms into an ascetic monk; or the young man coming to terms with his homosexuality once he leaves home but who must grapple with coming out to his family, one can relate and find inspiration. In the age of quick and superficial virtual friendships made via social media, these portraits offer a more textured, nuanced and authentic insight into men and women finding their true essences."
Jonathan Hollander
President and Artistic Director, Battery Dance Company, New York
"With this new book, Prof. Naresh Agarwal and Rahul Singh are archiving something that they know so well — to see the strength, resilience and raw power of the roots under the beautiful trees people have made. I highly recommend You Know the Glory, Not the Story: 25 Journeys towards Ikigai as it allows you to connect with your roots while appreciating and admiring others."
Sumeet Nagdev

"The book, You Know the Glory, Not the Story: 25 Journeys towards Ikigai is a manifestation of the depth of hard work, both in terms of the work put in by the authors, and in the lives of the people featured in the book. In order to understand a person, we cannot just look at the surface but need to dig deeper. It is only when we get a sense of this inner world of a person — their hard work, their aspirations, thoughts, and feelings, do we begin the process of understanding them. This depth can then serve as an example and inspiration for others to follow. I would like to greatly thank the authors for this beautiful work of bringing this depth to the surface and sharing it with the readers."
Bittu Mallick
Indian Classical and Mantra Singer, Vrindavan / Moscow
"Heartening to note that an effort has been made to compile stories of those that made-it-happen despite the problems they faced. Such stories will inspire many others to chase and fulfil their dreams."
Anil Swarup
Author and Former Education Secretary, Government of India
