This chapter analyzes and summarizes the risks and challenges of data security in different eras, scenarios, and fields, and systematically analyzes and summarizes the major threats to data security. On this basis, based on the threat analysis, the principles, processes, and methods of data security responses are given by comprehensively utilizing systems and methodologies such as the Cyber Security Framework (CSF), Risk Management Framework (RMF), and threat modeling analysis.

Data is a critical resource for every organization. As businesses move to the cloud and digitize their assets, the importance and value of data will only increase. Lost, compromised, or stolen data can have a devastating impact on business. According to a study conducted jointly by the IBM Corporation Security Team and Ponai Research Institute (IBM Security, 2019), the cost of handling each data breach incident is $3.92 million, and the average cost of exposing sensitive data is $150 per record. Verizon’s “2012 Data Breach Investigation Report” (Verizon Enterprise Solutions, 2012) summarized 855 security incidents that occurred within one year, involving more than 174 million records. Seven years later, the “2019 Data Leakage Investigation Report” (Verizon Enterprise Solutions, 2019) summarized 41,686 security incidents, of which 2013 was a confirmed data leak, and the total number of records could no longer be aggregated and counted…
