We calculate the contribution of deconfined spinons to inelastic neutron scattering (INS) in the fractionalized antiferromagnet (AF*), introduced elsewhere. We find that the presence of free spin-1/2 charge-less excitations leads to a continuum INS signal above the Néel gap. This signal is found above and in addition to the usual spin-1 magnon signal, which to lowest order is the same as in the more conventional confined antiferromagnet. We calculate the relative weights of these two signals and find that the spinons contribute to the longitudinal response, where the magnon signal is absent to lowest order. Possible higher-order effects of interactions between magnons and spinons in the AF* phase are also discussed.

We review recent work on a bosonic formulation of both anyon superconductivity and the fractional quantum Hall effect (FQHE). Central to this approach is the concept of charge-vortex duality in two-dimensional (2d) boson systems. A formal duality transformation which takes one from a particle to a vortex representation of a 2d boson model is described in detail. The duality transformation is employed to obtain detailed properties of both the FQHE hierarchy and a hierarchy of anyon superconducting phases.

An effective wavefunction for the edge excitations in the Fractional quantum Hall effect can be found by dimensionally reducing the bulk wavefunction. Treated this way the Laughlin ν = 1/(2n + 1) wavefunction yields a Luttinger model ground state. We identify the edge-electron field with a Luttinger hyper-fermion operator, and the edge electron itself with a non-backscattering Bogoliubov quasi-particle. The edge-electron propagator may be calculated directly from the effective wavefunction using the properties of a one-dimensional one-component plasma, provided a prescription is adopted which is sensitive to the extra flux attached to the electrons.

We introduce and study the nodal liquid, a novel zero-temperature quantum phase obtained by quantum-disordering a d-wave superconductor. It has numerous remarkable properties which lead us to suggest it as an explanation of the pseudo-gap state in underdoped high-temperature superconductors. In the absence of impurities, these include power-law magnetic order, a T-linear spin susceptibility, nontrivial thermal conductivity, and two- and one-particle charge gaps, the latter evidenced, e.g. in transport and electron photoemission (which exhibits pronounced fourfold anisotropy inherited from the d-wave quasiparticles). We use a (2+1)-dimensional duality transformation to derive an effective field theory for this phase. The theory is comprised of gapless neutral Dirac particles living at the former d-wave nodes, weakly coupled to the fluctuating gauge field of a dual Ginzburg–Landau theory. The nodal liquid interpolates naturally between the d-wave superconductor and the insulating antiferromagnet, and our effective field theory is powerful enough to permit a detailed analysis of a panoply of interesting phenomena, including charge ordering, antiferromagnetism, and d-wave superconductivity. We also discuss the zero-temperature quantum phase transitions which separate the nodal liquid from various ordered phases.

The Hall effect for disordered superconducting films in magnetic field is discussed, with special focus on the vicinity of the magnetic field-tuned superconductor–insulator transition. Evidence is presented that upon ensemble averaging this transition possesses a "hidden" particle/hole symmetry. This symmetry implies that right at the transition the Hall resistance vanishes. Relevance to recent experiments is discussed briefly.

The theory of second-order phase transitions is one of the foundations of modern statistical mechanics and condensed-matter theory. A central concept is the observable order parameter, whose nonzero average value characterizes one or more phases. At large distances and long times, fluctuations of the order parameter(s) are described by a continuum field theory, and these dominate the physics near such phase transitions. We show that near second-order quantum phase transitions, subtle quantum interference effects can invalidate this paradigm, and we present a theory of quantum critical points in a variety of experimentally relevant two-dimensional antiferromagnets. The critical points separate phases characterized by conventional “confining” order parameters. Nevertheless, the critical theory contains an emergent gauge field and “deconfined” degrees of freedom associated with fractionalization of the order parameters. We propose that this paradigm for quantum criticality may be the key to resolving a number of experimental puzzles in correlated electron systems and offer a new perspective on the properties of complex materials.
