Chapter 12: The Symbol Swastika in China
The word “symbol” here is defined as a “pattern or graphic character with symbolic meaning.” Since the symbol contains “symbolic meaning”, it displays not only a simple pattern but also expresses some abstract ideas, concepts and religious implications. Besides, the same symbol could be understood and explained differently in different regions. Therefore, as the symbols spread, rich ideas are fully exchanged. It reflects the important role played by symbols on the cultural communications of the ancient world. I will take the swastika as an example to talk about the cultural intercourses between ancient China and foreign countries.
