    Abstract:

A brief review of the properties of lasers required for use in gravitational-wave interferometers as well as a historical summary of the research conducted to meet these requirements are presented. This chapter serves as a prerequisite for the Advanced LIGO pre-stabilized laser design effort (Chapter 17). The last section touches very briefly on the research efforts underway to meet the needs for laser performance of future gravitational-wave interferometers.
