      Abstract:

      In the previous chapter we have discussed the premises which constitute indications for choosing the syntactic approach for solving a pattern recognition problem. All these premises determine the use of structural patterns and the representation of their syntax with the help of the finite set of generative rules which constitute the formal grammar. We will discuss these two fundamental assumptions of syntactic pattern recognition in a more detailed way in the following sections.
