    Abstract:

    Some examples of magnetic ordering phenomena in rare-earth compounds that include ferromagnetism, commensurate antiferromagnetism as well as incommensurate magnetic structures are given. The basic concepts concerning magnetic structures and their investigation are discussed. The determination of magnetic moment arrangements by neutron scattering is illustrated with special emphasis on neutron powder diffraction.
