Abstract:

The year 2016 saw in Western countries the rapid rise of extreme right-wing populist forces, the prevalence of trade protectionism and economic nationalism, and the intensified geopolitical competition, all of which exerted a significant negative impact on the process of globalization. China is now facing severe challenges brought forward by the wave of deglobalization and the increasing geopolitical pressures. To meet the challenges, China has to make great efforts to manage and control the geopolitical competition and, as a great power, shoulder the responsibility of promoting economic globalization while pursuing its own rise by opening up to the outside world.
